In 1954 after their respective Grand Finals, the Cowwarr and District League would have been left with 5 teams while the Sale District League had 6.
After Negotiations the two Leagues merged to form the Sale Cowwarr Football League to commence the 1955 Season.
1955 - Foundation Clubs - Cowwarr, Glengarry, Gormandale, Newry, Rosedale, Clydebank, Maffra Rovers, Boisdale, Old Collegians, R.A.A.F., and St. Patricks College.
1956 - Clydebank disbanded
1957 - Maffra Rovers went into recess, and Old Collegians withdrew during the season.
1958 - Nambrok admitted
1960 - Maryvale admitted, and Maffra Rovers re-admitted
1961 - St. Patricks College transfered to Latrobe Valley Football League 3rds competition
1963 - Traralgon admitted
1965 - The League renamed "The North Gippsland Football League"
1966 - Maryvale transfered to the Mid Gippsland Football League
1968 - Traralgon disbanded
1970 - Sale City admitted
1971 - Gippsland Grammar admitted to the Thirds competition
1973 - Open age Reserves competition commenced, and Thirds competition went into recess. Gippsland Grammarr transfered to the Latrobe Valley Football League Thirds competition.
1974 - Maffra Rovers merged with Maffra to play in the Latrobe Valley Football League. Stratford admitted.
1975 - Thirds competition reintroduced. Heyfield admitted
1978 - St. Patricks College re-admmitted to Thirds competition. A Sale Junior League team was admmitted into the Thirds competition
1981 - Traralgon Tyers United admitted
1983 - Traralgon Tyers United transfered to the Latrobe Valley Football League
1984 - Sale Junior League withdrew from the Thirds competition
1985 - Rosedale/Nambrok admitted into the Thirds competition. Boisdale & R.A.A.F. transfered to the Riviera Football League
1987 - Toongabbie admitted
1988 - Rosedale/Nambrok withdrew from the Thirds competition.
1989 - Traralgon Tyers United readmitted. Newry and Stratford transfered to the Riviera Footaball League
1994 - The North Gippsalnd Football League becomes incorporated.
1995 - Churchill admitted
1998 - Toongabbie went into recess
1999 - The League Administration changed to a Board of Management
2000 - Nambrok went into recess
2001 - The League amalgamated with the North Gippsaland Netball Association to become the North Gippsland Football Netball League
2003 - Sale City went into recess
2004 - Nambrok, Stratford, Newry, and Boisdale Brigolong admiited after the Riviera Football League was disbanded. Sale City came out of recess.
2005 - Nambrok and Newry went into recess
2008 - Woodside & District joined the League
2011 - Stratford applied to leave NGFNL to join Football Netball East Gippsland for the 2012 season
2014 - The Yarram Football Club joined the NGFNL
2014 - The NGFNL Administration was out sourced to AFL Gippsland the first administration Hub in Gipplsand
2014 - The Boisdale Briagolong FNC lapplied to leave the NGFNL to join Football East Gippsoland for the 2015 season
