Ideal conditions for Touch they were not, but the 2012 NZSS competitors still gave it their all as they contended with rain, wind, windy rain on the opening day for the tournament.
The mainstays of the Boys Grade, Hamilton Boys High School, one again started the competition strongly, with three wins to once again mark them as the team to beat. As last year's final against Rotorua showed though, HBHS can be beaten and a few contenders look to be lining up; Kings High School Dunedin, Westlake and Christchurch Boys High School all went through the day undefeated and tomorrow's Divisional play will be exciting as they go head-to-head.
Last year's runners-up in the Mixed grade, St Andrew's College breezed through their group with three strong wins and are looking likely to make it to the business end of the tournament come Sunday. Last year's winners, Macleans College and 2010's victor's St Peter's Cambridge are also in the mix, along with South Otago High School who were unbeaten on Day 1.
Mt Albert Grammar and Hamilton Girls High School fought out an intense Grand Final in 2011 and both teams have taken all before them this year as well. St Hilda's and Christchurch High School also put in good performances on Day 1 with all four teams winning their respective matches.
The weather looks to be clearing up over the weekend and the blue skies will complement the hot Touch on the fields at Waikato University.
