OBGSC Secure Major Sponsor for 2009 - AVG Internet Security and Anti-Virus Software

The OBGSC committee has secured AVG as it's major sponsor for 2009. AVG provide internet security and virus protection software for Australian and International businesses and consumers.

Please have a look around their website at www.avg.com.au .
The AVG sponsorship includes a new set of shirts, signage on the player shelters and other exposure opportunities. You will see their name around the club as the season starts.
Also, AVG have offered the club a further cash incentive if an AVG representative (MC's dad) sees the now famous 'I LOVE AVG' bumper stickers on the back of all player and supporter cars at Dendy. Matty will be handing them out soon to the players and supporters, so please help OBGSC make the most of this opportunity.
Thanks to AVG for their great support which will go a long way to helping the committee meeting the fundraising requirements this year, and speak to Matt Cameron or Matt Dawson if you need any anti virus software for work or home, and you will get a club discount.

Pre-Season Friendlies - Saturday 7th March 2009 vs Old Caulfield Grammarians SC @ Kingston Heath

OBGSC came up against the Old Caulfield Grammarians SC at Kingston Heath on Saturday the 7th of March 2009. The OBGSC seniors had the better of the game, and went up 1 nil after John Salvage latched onto a great through ball from Chris Rogers, and beat the keeper 1 on 1.

OCGSC then got a goal back as Lakey was pulled up for handball by referee Phil Ng. The penalty was cooly converted. OBGSC then got the lead back has Ken Keneko broke the defensive line from a great chip pass by Marcus Harbour. He wrong footed the keeper and finished at the back post.

The game finished 2-1, but on a down side for OBGSC. Injuries to Lee (ankle), George V (broken fibula), Paul Bratt (broken toe), Tass (ankle) and Ken (broken rib) will put the pressure on coach Harry Djumas to get the squad to Gel for Round 1.

The OBGSC Reserves won an exciting game 3-2 in the second game, with Chris Wright snatching a late winner after goalkeeper James Pennycuick let Caulfield back in the game with a miskick (Sorry Chooka, i don't always mean to give you a bad wrap).

The next friendly will see OBGSC against Old Scotch as the Old Boys Cup has been cancelled due to the council deeming the ground unsafe. There will be 1 game only, 3pm Saturday the 14th of March at Gardiners Reserve, Sixth Avenue, Burwood.

Pre-Season Friendlies - Saturday 21 February 2009 vs Melbourne Tornado @ Darebin

OBGSC had it's second pre-season friendly for 2009 at Darebin on Saturday the 21st of February. Stepping up it's preparations for the 2009 season, the seniors and reserves took on Melbourne Tornado from the North West Provisional 2 League.

The seniors took to the field first with a few new faces being rewarded for their hard work so far in pre-season. With Al Fourna running late, Bob Pascoe was thrown in the mix at Centre Back and performed well alongside Michael Woolhouse. OBGSC dominated early, with Tass Kourkoulis working hard at left back to get up the wings.

Some great dribbling from Ken Keneko saw the Tornados denfender sucked in and laid on his backside at the top of the box. Ken took the ball to the by-line and cut it back to James Pennycuick who had an open goal. Unfortunately he blazed over the bar for his 1st of three missed guilt edged chances for the day.

Against the run of play, the Tornados took the lead with a 35 minute wonder strike that nestled in the top corner. The second half saw OBGSC continue to have the better of play, and also the comeback of goalkeeper Marshall Sayer. Finally OBGSC's pressure paid off as John Foschini finished off a nice move. The game finished 1-1.

OBGSC Reserves continued the clubs dominace for the day against a tiring Tornados. Henry Blower and Simon Rolls were very solid in the middle of defence, and new boy Stewart Dracup looking lively up front. Chances fell to Tom Goldner and Jonathan Prendergast who were unable to finish.

The introduction of Alan Fourna and Joel Whitney made the crucial difference as OBGSC, now with the strong wind, made the most of their dominace. Both players notched up goals with nice strikes to give OBGSC the win 2-0

With head-coach Harry Djumas away next weekend, the next friendly is planned for Saturday the 7th of March, followed by the Old Boys Club's Cup on the Saturday 14th of March that will run all day. Competition for places is heating up so all players should ensure they get to training!

OBGSC Come out 4-0 Winners in First 2009 Pre-Season Hit Out

OBGSC came up against Watsonia Heights, Provisional League 2 North West, in their first friendly for 2009, at Darebin International Sports Centre on Sunday the 16th of February. Windy conditions saw both teams struggle to keep the ball under control at times, with the roll of the synthetic surface seeing many balls heading North go out for goal kicks.

OBGSC Senior Coach Harry Djumas experimented with positions throughout the 3 x 30 minute thirds, but the team seemed to gel as the game went on. A beautiful cross from James Pennycuick on the left saw Ken Keneko score his first goal the club and OBGSC take the lead in the 2nd third. Goalkeeper Mike Kourkoulis also did very well to hold the ball in swirly conditions.

OBGSC then dominated the final 3rd with the wind, with a 25 yard Marcus Harbour shot hitting the top corner, and then another long range effort saw John Foschini knock in the rebound from the keeper. Ken finished off the scoring with a nice finish from a tight angle when 1 on 1 with the keeper.

Generally, Watsonia didn't capatalise on their 3rd with the wind when putting OBGSC under pressure, and the constant work rate and defensive effort by OBGSC eventually led to their downfall. Harry was happy with the performance of the team, especially considering the calibre of the players to come into the squad over the next couple of weeks.

OBGSC's next hit out is on Saturday the 21st of February, at Darebin again (DISC, 281 Darebin Rd, Thornbury), with games at 2pm (firsts) and 3:45pm (reserves) against Melbourne Tornado.
