2012 FIJI OLYMPIC ORDER RECIPIENT - HORACE PETERSEN

This year’s recipient is well remembered for his high standards for users of the Olympic Pool in Suva, Mr. “P” as he was fondly known by his swimmers, went from initially supervising the pool and teaching morning swim classes for toddlers and youngsters to becoming head coach of Suva’s only swimming club, Dolphin, in 1971-1995 and from 1979 to 1992 as the National Head Coach of Fiji Swimming.

A strict and demanding taskmaster, Mr. P recognized raw talent and patiently nurtured it, requiring total commitment and dedication of his swimmers.  The excellence of a coach is determined by the quality of swimmers he has trained.  During Horace’s 16 year career, his swimmers included Carl Probert, Sharon Pickering, The Sorby’s – Mark, Warren and Shayne, Justine Macaskill, Dennis Miller, Gordon Peterson, Samu Tupou and many others.

Many of his swimmers represented Fiji at Olympic, Commonwealth and South Pacific Games with several winning Pacific Games medals whose records still stand today.  Mr P created and maintained a Golden Age for competition swimming in Fiji by his determination and the high quality of his coaching.

For his commitment, dedication and contribution to the development of swimming plus excellent achievements of Fiji national representative swimmers, FASANOC is very pleased to confer the FIJI OLYMPIC ORDER to HORACE PETERSEN.
