PROFILES - February 2014 David Parker (Life Member)

Q1 – Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 53 years old, married to Tania; have two boys Adam who is 25 and Bradley who is 20. I work as a support worker with the disabled and having been doing that for the past 17 years and enjoy it immensely. I also enjoy most sports, namely cricket which I am still involved in and of course my number one passion soccer.

Q2 – Tell us how you first got involved in the sport of soccer (football) and what was your first involvement with the game in Parkes?

My mum Dawn got me involved in soccer at the ripe old age of 4 as she didn’t want me to play rugby league and I have been involved ever since. My first involvement was as a player and well I guess the rest is history from there, being a player, Coach, Referee, Administrator

Q3 – What do you enjoy about being involved in the sport in Parkes?

The pleasure of watching young and old enjoying the great game of football

Q4 – What do you plan to do now that you have stepped down from your position of Secretary after such a long time in the position?

To still be involved with soccer but at a lesser role, bearing in mind that I am still Secretary of Lachlan and a Western NSW Board member, to be able to go and watch my other favourite side the South Sydney Rabbitohs whenever the opportunity arises and also to do some traveling of a weekend with my wife

Q5 – What is you favourite memory you have to date from your time involved in the sport?

Wow, there are a number of highlights, too many to mention but I guess some of the favourites would be being made Life Member of Parkes and also the Referee’s Branch, being able to play soccer with my two sons, winning the 1st Division Grand Final of LASA against red hot favourites Young 2-1 in Cowra and bringing an end to their dominance, watching and helping Ground Six transfer from a dirt track to what it is today

Q6 – Who has been one person that has had a big influence in you involvement in the sport to date and why?

I guess it would have to be my mum, she got me involved in the game and even though we had our ups and downs, the game has always brought enjoyment to both of us

Q7 – When you were player what position did you play?

I started out as a centre forward through the junior ranks until I turned 14 where I was asked to play goalkeeper for the School side as no one wanted to do it and happened to be spotted by Derek Fellows who was our coach of a Saturday afternoon and from then on goalkeeper was my position

Q8 – What did you like to do outside of the game?

Spend time with family and friends

Q9 – Do you follow the Hyundai A-League? If so, which team do you support?

Yes, Central Coast Mariners

Q10 – Who is your favourite all time player and why?

Glen Hoddle, he was a magician with the ball and could turn a match on its head whenever the opportunity arose
