Dockers v Demons
The conditions at the Champetre pitch can only be described as horrible. It has been raining nonstop and the skies don’t look to be letting up any time soon. The overwhelming favourites for this contest are clearly the Dockers who are unbeaten in the first two games and are coming off a big win over the Eagles in Round 2. The Demons are winless in the first two games and very few people are giving them any chance this afternoon.
The game starts and as is to be expected, we are going to be in for quite a difficult game. The ball is slippery and the field isn’t much better which means that there are going to be few marks and a lot of balls that are going to hit the ground. The Dockers control the first half quite easily and seem to be on their way to a pretty big lead at quarter time. Matthew Priess is clearly the star of the first half with several scoring shots including a goal a several behinds. Just as the whistle for quarter time is about the go, Kyle Graham pulls the Demons a bit closer and the margin is 14 points after the first quarter.
The second quarter starts off a lot like the first, the Dockers are clearly the stronger team and they aren’t letting the Demons any chance to get into the game. Duff is strong around the contest and gets a few goals in this quarter. With about 7 minutes left in the half, the Dockers are up by 22 points and seem well on their way to another win, but the wind suddenly changes direction in the game and the Demons get the last 5 goals of the quarter to end up ahead by 2 points at half time. There is a controversy brewing as a time keeping error allows the half to go longer by about 25 seconds and the Demons get their last goal after what should have been the half-time siren.
As the third quarter begins, we can tell that the Dockers are suddenly nervous and it can be seen in their game. They aren’t as confident with the ball as before, but they get into a momentum and with about 2 minutes left in the quarter the score is tied between the bottom and top team in the league. Daniel Robinson is a very important addition to these Demons who were clearly in need of some extraordinary talent. He is confident and his precise kicks are well supported by Kyle Graham’s eye for goal. At 3 quarters time, the score is tied at 46 and it promises to be a cracking last quarter.
The last quarter gets underway and it is anybody’s game. With the Dockers down by 7 points and just a few minutes left in the game it seems like the end until an important goal by Toby who gives the Dockers hope of a comeback. However, they are unable to finish the match strong and Kyle Graham kicks a point just as the siren goes and the Demons surprise the Dockers by a score of 61 to 59.The goal kicking star of the game is clearly Kyle Graham who ends up winning the coveted Player of the Round.
