What The Papers Said About Our Steelers This Week
Western Port Young Guns Off To A Flying Start
Hastings Leader – 13th November 2012
Western Port is off to a good start in the Country Basketball League with Steelers general manager Marc Pirrotta pleased this season’s competition is geared more towards younger players than veterans
“Associations used to stack their teams with Big V players 30-40 years old, but this year the league has a more development feel to it,” Pirrotta said
Apart from a handful of players in their 20’s, Western Port has put young sides on the court during the first 4 rounds of the season, with over half the women’s team being Steelers junior rep players, and the results have been encouraging
Under the guidance of Pirrotta, the Lady Steelers have won their first four games, which included 2 single-point victories.
Jess Thompson, of Frankston’s SEABL team and former Western Port junior, and 16 year old Monique Lyth, of Sandringham, have each played well
The Steelers men’s team has won 3 of its first 4 games. Jack Gaze, of the Melbourne Tigers Youth League team, and 7-footer Sam Hickey (Frankston SEABL) have been standouts.
“They are helping a very young group and our CBL Program is all about developing the next generation of Big V players for Western Port” Pirrotta said
James Langford, Western Port’s Big V Vice-captain, is serving as head coach of the men’s team
