Kristen Veal

In a coup for Basketball in South East Queensland, Brisbane Basketball has secured WNBL Logan Thunder star and current Australian Jayco Opals Squad member Kristen Veal, to a multiple year deal to Coach the Brisbane Capitals QBL Women.

Kristen will bring a wealth of experience and a great level of knowledge to the Caps program, as well as stability something that has been missing in recent years. With Kristen committed to the BDS Logan Thunder, her off season will see her now make her coaching debut leading the Caps from the sideline.

When asked about coaching compared with playing the point guard position, a role she has played on the international level as part of numerous Australian teams, “leadership qualities are necessary for both and it’s just a different perspective on the action of the game” she said.

Veal is renowned for her tough nosed style of play and her level of commitment something she feels will make the program stronger and she will expect of her players. With Caps fans over the years being eager to see what to expect from their team, Kristen said “a team that is fit, defensively and skill focussed and prides itself on putting the team first”.

In recent weeks whispers of a possible deal had spread through the basketball community and with the excitement surrounding the positive direction the club has seen in the last couple of years, this signing brings more optimism for the home of basketball in South East Queensland.

Kristen on being an integral part of this move forward and to continue to move from strength to strength said “The opportunity to help establish a culture of enjoyable, exciting and engaging basketball, where everyone wants to watch and or play…excites me the most about Coaching at the Brisbane Capitals”.

When General Manager Tracey Wroe was questioned on what this signing meant for the Brisbane Basketball Community “We have the best club competitions, some of the best juniors, the greatest number of local players who go onto college, the AIS and to play for Australia. Now we have one of the most high profile names in this great sport, it’s a fresh, invigorating change and will provide our Women’s program with a wealth of knowledge.”

She later talked about what this will mean for our juniors “they now have someone to aspire to be like, someone who they can talk to and meet whose done it all from playing in the WNBA to playing for Australia, this a major boost for the women’s game in South East Queensland and something no other club can say.”
