Season 2008/09

In 2008/09, Football Federation Victoria launched the first season of the Victorian Champions League (then known as Summer League).  The League is a new competition designed to develop Victoria’s football talent and form a selection competition for State Team representation.

The inaugural season was established within a very short lead time, and is an enormous credit to the pioneering volunteers at each of the 12 newly established Zones who worked tirelessly to get it off the ground.

The result was a 16-round competition culminating in a finals weekend, which saw an incredibly high standard of football played throughout the State over the summer period.

Along the way, considerable feedback has been provided to FFV from a number of VCL stakeholders and the second season of the League will take on board these comments and a series of improvements made to ensure its ongoing success and enjoyment for all participants and their families.

We congratulate the following Zones who were Grand Final Winners and Runners Up in the inaugural VCL season of 2008-09:

  • Under 13 Boys
North West (2) defeated Central (0)
  • Under 14 Boys
Central (2) defeated North West (1)
  • Under 15 Boys
Southern (2) defeated South East (1)
  • Under 18 Boys
Goulburn North East (4) defeated Southern (2)
  • Under 13 Girls
    Gippsland (4) defeated Northern (2)
  • Under 15 Girls
North East (3) defeated Loddon Mallee (1)
  • Under 17 Girls
South East (4) defeated Gippsland (0)
  • Open Women

Congratulations also to all participants in the inaugural VCL season.  Selection into a Zone representative side is a remarkable achievement and Football Federation Victoria was delighted to see so many outstanding talented participants representing their respective Zones in the first VCL season, and we look forward to watching the development and progress of these young stars as they continue their football journey.

A comprehensive player and parent survey was conducted at the conclusion of the 2008-09 season and a report detailing some of the key findings will be posted here soon.
