Fifteen year old Geelong Supercats representative player, Jacob Pupavac, has won a gold medal for Australia at the 2012 FIBA Oceania Pacific Youth Championships.
The tournment, held in Churchill from the 24th November to the 2nd December, consisted of eight FIBA Oceania countries – Samoa, Guam, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia. Jacob was one of ten players selected to the Australian team after being invited to the Australian Institute of Sport for a training camp in September. The teams in the Pacific Youth Championships consisted of players 19 years and under.
The Australian team cruised through the tournament undefeated, with Jacob putting up his best numbers in the quarter finals against Papua New Guinea – finishing with 18 ponts and 7 rebounds. The Aussies came up against neighbouring rivals New Zealand in the Gold Medal match, and Jacob put in an outstanding defensive effort to help his team win the gold by 17 points (final score 66-49).
The Australian women’s team also won gold at the tournament, defeating New Zealand 67-49 in their gold medal match.
Congratulations to both the men’s and women’s Australian Youth Championship teams on their gold medal victories, and well done to local player Jacob Pupavac on an oustanding tournament!
