KORUMBURRA CITY CUP

SAT 14TH & SUN 15TH APRIL

Korumburra City Soccer Club kicked off the 2012 soccer season with the Korumburra Cup weekend. We saw 5 junior under 13’s and under 16’s paying in glorious conditions on the Saturday and senior menand women stepping up in perfect weather conditions on the Sunday. The juniors all had a great day outwith all 5 clubs playing 4 games. The games were all closely contested with all wins by only a one goalmargin and plenty of draws. The standard of soccer in the South division is certainly getting better andbetter each year. The under 13’s final saw Drouin Dragons versing Wonthaggi United. In a very evenlymatched final both teams scored during the game and finished level. With a sudden death penaltyshoot out testing all Drouin Dragons came out on top with a beautiful save from their u11’s goalie. Theunder 16’s games were also very evenly matched although with the new age group of under 16’s thereis a great difference in all the players sizes. The teams again were evenly matched with the final beingplayed between Phillip Island and Wonthaggi. In a nail biter of a game Phillip Island game out on topkicking the winning goal just seconds from full time. Congratulations to all clubs it shows us we have anexciting season ahead with some great soccer to be played. The Sunday’s senior games no different tothe junior games. We had four women’s teams and six men’s team competing for this year’s cup. Thewomen’s games were all evenly matched with only six goals being scored between all four teams up tothe final. The final saw Korumburra again for the second year in a row take on Phillip Island. With a hardfought game the final score was 0-0. Going to a sudden death penalty shoot out the nerves and tensionin the air could be felt all round the ground. But with nerves of steel Chloe Rodda (Korumburra’s goalkeeper) stood up to the challenge stopping 4 of Phillip Island’s penalties and scoring her own penalty.Korumburra were winners 2-1 after the shoot out. Well done to all women’s teams participating today. It’s great to see the women’s teams growing not only with players but with the skills. The senior men’sgames were no different with all games being very close and the final up for grabs right to the end.Unfortunately Drouin drew with Mirboo North in a nail biter putting Phillip Island into the final againstWonthaggi. This game too went down to the wire with a 0-0 draw and the end of normal time. Thiscaused the game to a sudden penalty shoot out seeing Phillip Island this defeat Wonthaggi. Well done toall clubs who participated in the cup weekend. It goes to show we have an exciting year ahead of us inthe South Division. Good luck to all teams and clubs in the year ahead.
