Womens Match Report Castlemaine vs Swan Hill

With Castlemaine and Swan Hill sitting sixth and seventh on the ladder respectively,
this was always going to be a close match.

Maine started well and had the run of the play for the first five minutes
with a well placed corner kick into the box but was missed by everyone and
an accurate cross left was squandered when a Maine forward missed a certain
scoring opportunity. A long shot went high towards goal, hits the bottom
of the crossbar and almost over the goal line. There?s a scrimmage in the
box and eventually cleared.

The Swan Hill women finally wake from their slumber
and start playing football. Isabella Salvo and Ieesha Kelly-Obrien start
working well together up forward but their shots are going high or wide.

Maggie Smith and Jodie Lea regularly work the ball around the square to put
Lea in a scoring position but cannot beat the keeper or shots going wide.
Kelly-Obrien puts a good deflection on a swift pass into the square but goes
just wide.

Swans defenders Allison lewin, Maddie Moser, Natalie Matthews
and Tara Thomas are working hard repelling the ball out of the defensive
half creating chances for the forwards. A Maine long fast ball gets through
with a forward running onto it looking to score when Matthews comes from
a long way back to cut her off and clear the ball. With minutes to go in
the first half there is a Maine throw in deep in our defence. Moser clears
to Smith who runs up the centre evading opponents, sends a long ball forward
to Salvo who gets clear of the defenders into space to shoot. The shot looked
perfect angling from right to left towards the top left corner of the goal
but swings too far.

The second half was very even with many heart stopping scoring opportunities.
A Maine corner lands in the box and a threatening scrimmage follows but is
finally cleared by Moser. Megan Williamson and Matthews combine in deep defence
passing up to Smith, then to Lea at halfway, through ball to Salvo who chips
the keeper but the shot is wide.

Maine have a few free kicks in their forward
half one of which causes a frantic scrimmage in the box with the ball ping
ponging around and keeper Chrissie Stewart who has been working hard all
game finally gathers the ball.

Thomas starts to regularly work the ball forward
out of defence into our forward half creating chances but nothing is getting
to the back of the net. Salvo, Kelly-Obrien, Smith and Lea all have shots
at goal but the keeper saves or the shots are wide or high.

Our best chance
came when Moser sent a long ball from halfway down the right to Smith who
boots a great cross to Salvo at the top of the 18yd box. She chips the ball
into goal but hits the crossbar. After a hard fought even game a win would
have been great but the draw was a fair result.
