Ladies get great win away to Blaze B.C.

Blaze B.C. were this week’s opposition in the North West Regional Leagues

Blaze B.C. 52 Donegal Town B.C. 57

An away game in Letterkenny saw our ladies up against the undefeated Blaze and the most improving team in the League. With structured link players the Brennan sisters in their ranks and a nicely balanced squad with both youth and experience they have proven a very tough nut to crack in recent seasons. Coached by Karen Bourne she can call on Linda Mc Guinness formerly of Killybegs along with Deirdre Ward one time of Milford and Letterkenny and Bernie Cunninghame who has been one of the top guards in the league for a long time among others. This coupled with the best support in the league in the Convent and you have a very tough place to get a win. Our girls to their credit despite missing some of our senior players came away with a great win and some new stars were born. The first saw a close affair with the away team just edging it 18-15. Tara Khan and Kelly Harron did the most damage around the basket with Maeve Liston hitting a lovely 3 to give us the advantage at the end of the quarter. Blaze reacted well and dominated the 2nd quarter with R Multpeter 8pts having a great quarter along with newly crowned Donegal Sports Star winner Clodagh Brennan. Blaze won 20-13 and took a 35-31 half time lead. The third quarter was a defensive matter with both teams really stepping up on their D but offensively no one could buy a basket. Donegal won 5-2 to set up a great finish with Blaze leading by 1pt. Libby Duffy and Tara Khan showed all their experience in the last and along with Kelly Harron and the excellent Maeve Liston pulled a few points up going into the last minute. Blaze rallied and had good finishes by Mc Guinness and C Brennan but just came up short as Donegal wrestled away their unbeaten start to the season. Donegal can thank their bench players for stepping up while they had players missing and are sure to come up against this improving Blaze challenge again before the seasons out. Big thanks to Roisin Mc Daid and Kathryn Martin who played their part in a terrific win and made themselves available for the team. MVP was a joint affair with both Maeve Liston and Tara Khan getting the shout. Michaela Breslin, Kelly Harron and Claire Brady who hit a lovely 3 pointer were excellent along with Captain Brid Murphy, Libby Duffy. Tralee Imperials at home next sat 8pm in the national league if your around the girls could sure do with your support.

This was a cracker of a game with both sides playing some lovely basketball and taking some great scores. Blaze came out of the blocks fast and took control of the game getting in for easy drives on a regular basis while Thomas Mc Gowan kept his side in the game. Aaron Deeney was playing terrific for Blaze and along with Niall Hannigan they crept into a 12 point lead at one stage in the first half. Donegal though came storming back into the game with some great steals from Keelan Heeney who converted some very difficult chances. Donegal big man Michal Dzewiecki was proving a handful for the Letterkenny lads with some great blocks and rebounds for his side and also keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Donegal didn’t get on top until well into the final quarter and it was Thomas mc Gowan who proved the difference controlling procession and taking his chances plus assist after assist for Mical Dzewiecki who scored a whooping 27points. With a small squad at this age group the young u12s are really learning form Mc Gowan with great improvement showed by Caolan Mitchell, Darren Edwards, Patrick Breslin and Keelan Heeney especially. Blaze played their part in this great game and they too had some great young players on show with Deeney and Hannigan the pick. MVP you would think has to big Michal but he would have to admit Mc Gowans supply was top notch. MVP goes to Thomas mc Gowan with one of the best displays of the season. With special mention for Michal and Keelan Heeney who were also class on the day.

U16 Boys

Donegal Town 40 Blaze 30

Again it was Blaze who provided the opposition in this game which was played on the Saturday. Great to see Blaze teams back in the Region as they bring a lot to the party. Our lads were never really under pressure and the spread of the scorers would suggest a great all round threat to the basket for Coach John Kennedy fresh back from his nomination in the team awards in the Donegal sports Star awards where some Gaa (Donegal)team just shaded the award!!! Led by Dylan Kennedy at point guard and with the improving Seamus Carr and Brendan Mc Cole this game was never really in doubt and a 10 point home win will leave this group happy. MVP Brendan Mc Cole for his energy and with some more experience at this level should develop well.

Donegal Town; E Broderick 4, G Cleary 2, N Ward 6, D Kennedy 6, M Oates 2, S Carr 7, B Mc Cole 7, A Reid 4. Coach John Kennedy.
