Proj3kt 3on3, the youth basketball project launched at five of the BBL clubs last October as a partnership between the BBL Foundation and Sport England, has now added a series of regional tournaments to the regular sessions they have been running in the five BBL clubs local areas. These regional tournament winners will get chance to play in the finals on the 9th of March in front of a large crowd at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, which plays host to the BBL Trophy Final. The tournaments will be organised as under 18 and under 20 boys, and under 20 girls.
Proj3kt 3on3, which has seen over 3500 attendees at its sessions since its launch in October, is designed to test ways of engaging with boys and girls in the key 16-19 age group. It uses a programme of 3on3 basketball designed and delivered by BBL clubs and includes both indoor and outdoor sessions where possible. The project has the backing of world governing body FIBA who are hoping the 3on3 version of the game will become an Olympic sport in its own right at Rio 2016 and see it as an ideal way to introduce young people to the sport in England.
The tournaments are being run by Cheshire Phoenix, Newcastle Eagles, Leicester Riders, Surrey Heat and Worcester Wolves throughout February and early March.
