After resounding anthems and a haka by the Maori Men for their female counterparts, the game got well under way, marking the beginning of the tournament.
At half time the Aussies led 2-0, with goals to Brook McFadden in the 30th minute and Kate Ryan scoring their second a minute later. Final goal went to Jane Puckett in the second half.
William Gaynor coach said that it was very satisfying taking the first win of the tourney. ‘Winning the first match always settles the nerves and sets up the rest of the tournament,” Gaynor said.
The Australian team are now brimming with confidence as they try to retain their title as winners of the Women's title. They will take on Papua New Guinea tomorrow.
New Zealand Maori Women will have a bye tomorrow so have adequate time to regroup before their next match on Monday against the Fiji team.
For the first day there was a good turn out from supporters, and organisers are hopeful the numbers will increase as the tournament gets into full swing.
