Doug Golding

Doug’s involvement began when he attended a public meeting called by Tom Moore to establish a basketball association on the north shore.

He, with a couple of others, put his hand up to take on that challenge. Over the ensuing ten years he was a member of the committee, serving 6 years as president, in 2 stints

He also served as referees coordinator, judiciary chairman and general committee person.

He also took holidays to conduct school holiday camps to try to encourage interest in basketball on the north shore.

In the beginning, there was no paid employees (although the secretary received an honorarium). so Doug, and others pitched in wherever necessary to ensure the smooth running of the Association including acting as court supervisors, referees, opening and closing the gyms where the competitions were held, banking funds collected each night, and filling in for court supervisors in case of illness, car trouble, etc.

Committee Meetings were conducted in our homes and being pre PC and email, all correspondence was very manual.

Doug played rep basketball for Norths along with Danny Martinez in the 2 seasons (Metropolitan Conference) NSBA was permitted to compete in during the 1st ten years. He is a referee and has been since the mid 80s

Doug was granted life membership in 1991. He says “I am immensely proud of having been able to contribute to the establishment and growth of Northern Suburbs Basketball Association.”
