Club History

Ellesmere Port Panthers Basketball Club was formed in 1997 as a result of demand from the very successful local High School basketball team. These teams, under the guidance of Mike Burton, had won every school national basketball event in their age group (both boys and girls) and wanted to develop their skills in the National club league. Kim Leedham and Jimmy McGinn then took on the coaching and managers role to move the club forward into the National league as the Ellesmere Port Panthers. This club went on to become a high profile club amongst junior basketball winning 5 National League Championships and 6 National Trophies from 2001 - 2006. In the last season as Panthers the first ever U13 boys team finished 4th at Final Fours.

Summer 2008 Panthers joined forces with the local BBL team Cheshire Jets, with the intentions to enable both teams to develop players to their full potential giving them a structured development plan through the sport from primary age, through to adulthood. From the season 2009 the Ellesmere Port Panthers played under the umberella of the BBL team as Cheshire Junior Jets. This proved to be short lived and Cheshire Juniors have entered the 2011/12 North and Northwest leagues under their own identity as Cheshire Juniors after splitting away from the Jets link.

Cheshire Juniors continue to grow from strength to strength and remain a formidable force in English youth basketball. Cheshire Juniors continue to attract some of the best young players from districts of Cheshire and beyond and many novice players have reached national standard basketball by the time they reach their 18th birthday thanks to the high standard of coaching on offer.

The National league has a regional focus (ours is the North & North West) throughout the season (September - May). Juniors play teams from Manchester, Bury, Stockport, Liverpool, Barrow and as far up as Newcastle. The top two teams from each league go through to play offs against South, East and West and culminate in the Final Fours tournament organised by England Basketball played at Sheffield's EIS, Manchester's Ameichi Centre and Nottingham Wildcats Arena. The league is organised into age groups, Cheshire Juniors currently have 5 Boys and 3 Girls  teams entered across all age groups for northern leagues run by England basketball, which is the highest standard for youth basketball in the country.
