KB Market, Mobil prevail in QQ Cup

KB/ABCD II Market's Marlon De Dios converts a fastbreak layup against KFC/Taco Bell's Nevin Salem during their game in the QQ Cup last Friday at the Garapan Basketball Court. (Walter Cepeda Sutherland) KB/ABCD II Market and Mobil came out triumphant in their respective games in the QQ Car Rental Basketball Cup last Friday at the Garapan Basketball Court.

KB Market outlasted KFC/Taco Bell, 82-74, in the late feature, while Mobil held off OCM Corporation, 71-62, in the first match of the night. Mobil and KB Market now hold similar 2-1 records for second place behind the undefeated NMC/Lions Club' Proa (2-0) and Blue Haus (2-0), while OCM (0-3) and KFC/Taco Bell (0-3) are bringing up the rear.

Bernard Aquino and John Acosta each drained a three-pointer late in the first period to give KB Market an 18-15 favor early on and they jumped out to a healthy 39-29 margin at halftime with a mixed bag containing a handful of donors.

Aquino's 10 points led KB Market in the first half and their offense stalled in the third quarter with him on the bench, allowing KFC/Taco Bell to mount a comeback.

Jack Aranda and Nevin Salem ignited a nice rally that put KFC/Taco Bell within one possession, 52-55, heading into crunch time.

KFC/Taco Bell hung around for half of the final 10 minutes, but KB Market went big against its youthful rivals and dominated the boards late in the game to secure the win. Aquino and Rolly Paraiso went on to combine for 17 points in the clutch to bring home the victory.

In the curtain raiser, Mobil assumed control in the opening canto, 22-19, thanks largely to Elgene Mangali's late 8-point string.

Syl Teregeyo tallied 8 points, too, in the second quarter to help keep OCM hot in pursuit at intermission, 33-34, Mangali and Marvin Rabauliman hooked up for 19 points to carry the torch for Mobil in the first half.

After the pause, OCM lingered through the third quarter, 51-55, but Mobil's half court attack continued to reap rewards and the veteran group sunk four free throws to preserve the win.

Jun Estolas topped the box score with 17 points, while OCM's Ben Lisua turned in a team-high 13 on the short end.
