Mobil upsets Blue Haus, Proa routs KB Market

Lions Club/NMC Proa's Jack Lizama fires a jump shot over KB/ABCD II Market's Kelvin Fitial during Friday's 3rd QQ Car Rental Basketball Cup pairing at the Garapan Basketball Court. (Walter Cepeda Sutherland) There are no longer any undefeated squads left in QQ Car Rental's 3rd Basketball Cup edition as erstwhile undefeated Blue Haus was thunderstruck by back-to-back champions Mobil Smiles, 91-77, in last Friday's early tip at the Garapan Basketball Court.

In the late game, Lions Club/NMC Proa manhandled KB/ABCD II Market, 84-70.

Notably, the regular season was scheduled to wrap up last night with a single face-off between Kentucky Fried Chicken/Taco Bell and OCM Corp., which are both starving for at least one win before the postseason. A total of six teams represent the field.

Blue Haus' lone shortcoming in its fifth and final engagement locked them back in the standings with Proa (4-1), while Mobil finished the regular season all square with KB Market with 3-2 slate. KFC/Taco Bell and OCM both trail the pack with identical cards of 0-4.

Blue Haus rode on the back of center Bruce Berline, who bruised out 8 points in the opening period for an early 24-23 edge.

Mobil's offense in the first quarter came primarily from 8 points by Errol Peredo with an additional 6 apiece by Gyles Ruluked and Larry Sharry.

Peredo stayed on the court in the second quarter and teamed up with swingman Banjo Basila as the duo tallied 8 points each, but Blue Haus buried three from long-range shots in the period that kept the match at a 45-all stalemate at midpoint.

Two of Blue Haus' bombs came from Brendon Talania who led the group through the first half with 14 points.

Mobil's Peredo answered Talania after the break and drained a pair of three-balls as the team gripped a 71-63 edge off output from six players in the third quarter. They also sank five shots from the stripe in the swing.

Behind three large possessions at crunch time, Blue Haus was unable to cast any magic to inspire another comeback win this time around as Mobil kicked it into overdrive down the homestretch.

Peredo started the final wave with 5 points and led all scorers in the end with 29, while Blue Haus' Elmer Esdrelon managed 21 under duress.

In the second match, KB Market nailed four 3-pointers in the first quarter, but still trailed Proa, 20-17, as a handful of latter squad players chipped in on the bill. Perry Inos twice connected from behind the arc for 8 points in the first to head the group.

The contest remained close in the second quarter as Proa stood its ground and clung to a 39-36 favor at the pause by spreading the ball around to seven different players.

Proa then pined it sears back after halftime and trotted out to a healthy 63-51 lead in the third quarter thanks largely to Josh Sablan's 8-point offering late in the period. He splashed in two treys before the third bell.

KB Market simply fell too far behind by the start of the final period and was unable to posture a comeback, while Mobil airmailed another trio of threes for good measure.

Proa's Dan Barcinas and Jack Lizama co-led the group with 13 points apiece, while KB Market's Rolly Paraiso finished with a game-high total of 15.
