The CNMI U19 Junior National Team won its debut in the girls division of the 2013 U19 Micronesian Basketball Tournament yesterday at the Father Duenas Memorial School Phoenix Centre in Hagatna.
The CNMI cagebelles routed Guam U16, 45-29, to have a good start in the weeklong competition. According to reports posted from the Guam Sports Network, the Commonwealth bets held the host's U16 squad to 11 points in the first half to notch the double-digit win. The report added that Jeraldine Castillo led the opening win, firing 12 points. Joining Castillo on the squad are Glorily Williams, Jamie Mendoza, Jeralyn Castillo, Rachel Abrams, Kaylania Lebria, Kyla Ito, Jan-asia Travilla, Michelle Kautz, Madeleine Alegre, Friendly Joy Pena, and Marie Javier Fernandez. Preston Basa and Connie Camacho are the coach and assistant, respectively.
No other details about the game were available at press time as Saipan Tribune was waiting for the email response of team officials and the official score sheet from the tournament website.
Meanwhile, three other games were also scheduled in the opening day with the CNMI U19 Junior National Team colliding against Guam U16 in the boys division in the final game of the opener last night at 6pm. Results were unavailable at press time.
The CNMI also has a 12-player roster in the boys division with Jack Aranda leading the squad and joining Ichitaro Faisao, Chris Mizer, Marc Babauta, Malcolm Maui, Darius Pettis, Erick Dela Rosa, Bryle Alegre, Jimmy Tudela, Shane Deleon Guerrero, and Emerson Feria. Ed Manalili, Rufino Aguon, and Joe Villacrusis are members of the coaching staff.
Guam won the two other games played in Day 1 with its U19 girls team blowing out Palau, 70-31. According to reports from Guam Sports Network, the host went on a 21-0 run and never looked back to give the visitors a rude welcome.
Destiny Castro anchored Guam U19's win with her 20 points, while Palau got 13 markers from Trang Ksano.
Guam's U19 boys team also cruised to victory against Palau, 80-51. Palau kept Guam within striking distance at halftime, down by only 10, 34-44, before Sammy Setik led the breakaway in the second half. Guam Sports Network reported that Setik unloaded three triples in the third quarter to help Guam pull away and take the 29-point win.
