EMON LODGE BASKETBALL LEAGUE GAME 16

Mobil, PIC share second spot

Pacific Islands Club’s Nicko Salem drives against the Blazers’s Juan Maratita, right, and Dexter Mendiola, second left, during the third quarter of their game in the Emon Lodge caging last Tuesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) Mobil and Pacific Islands Club forced a tie for second place in the Emon Lodge No. 179 Brotherhood Basketball League 2013/Docomo Pacific Cup after downing separate foes last Tuesday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Mobil walloped KFC/Taco Bell in the first game, 103-80, to improve to a 3-2 record, the same mark PIC holds after defeating the Blazers in the second match of the night, 71-63. KFC/Taco Bell joined the three-way tie for the No. 2 spot after the 23-point loss to Mobil. AXE Proa leads the nine-squad league with its perfect 5-0 record, while the Blazers are at the bottom of the team standings with a dismal 0-5 slate.

The Blazers had a good start, leading at 9-2, but started relinquishing the driver’s seat in the closing minute of the first canto, as James Abuy came off the bench and unloaded back-to-back triples for their 20-17 advantage.

A quick 8-0 run at the beginning of the second canto gave PIC its first taste of the double-digit lead. PIC went on to keep a safe distance against the winless Blazers, which repeatedly launched comeback bids, but could not break the 7-point barrier. The Blazers had two opportunities to threaten PIC in the fourth quarter after Sean Sablan made a baseline jumper, 58-65, and they got the ball back off their foes’ inbound error. However, Luther Taylor missed a reverse layup, while Darwin Barbo connected on a drive on the other end to put PIC’s lead back to 9, 67-58.

Another basket from Sean Sablan sliced PIC’s lead to seven anew with 1:35 left in the game and the Blazers got one more chance to move closer after a PIC muffed offensive set. However, Dexter Mendiola threw an errant pass to Sean Sablan and that was it for the Blazers, as PIC wisely used the clock and got two free throws and an undergoal stab from Ham Hambrose to secure the win.

Hambros top-scored for PIC with his 16 points.

In the second game, Freddie Pelisamen came out of disqualification in their previous game and played like a man possessed, scoring 37 big points to power Mobil to the easy win over KFC. He showed consistent offense in all four quarters, leaving KFC no chance of pulling off an upset over the defending champion.

Pelisamen knocked down 7 straight points in the first period, giving Mobil a 26-24 advantage. He then started the second canto with 5 consecutive markers and made Mobil’s last three field goals in that period to increase their lead to 7 at the break, 46-39. At the resumption of the match, Pelisamen added 9 more points, as Mobil erected a double-digit lead, 72-60. The Mobil gunner was still on target in the fourth, as he nailed 8 points and his team finished off KFC by canning three straight triples.

Mobil also drew double figures from four other players to rout KFC. Marvin Rabauliman chipped in 18, Jun Estolas added 16, and Zack Babauta and Errol Peredo contributed 10 apiece. Jaymark De Guzman had 29 markers for KFC, which played sans Ivan Devero and got only 12 points from Lerio Pagarao.
