Proa dodges Armatech’s upset axe

AXE Proa’s Quincy Johnson, seen here going for a layup in a game against Mobil in the Emon Lodge caging last month, helped his team rally past Armatech last Thursday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) AXE Proa flirted with its first loss of the season before pulling off a 68-65 win over Armatech in the lone game played in the Emon Lodge No. 179 Brotherhood Basketball League 2013/Docomo Pacific Cup last Thursday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The scary win moved AXE Proa a win away from sweeping the round-robin regular season, while the loss snapped Armatech’s two-game winning run. Proa now has a 7-0 record to strengthen its hold of the No. 1 spot and will play its last game in the elimination round tomorrow against San Roque. Armatech fell at the middle of the standings of the nine-team field with its 3-3 slate.

Armatech’s upset axe missed Proa, as the former went scoreless for about five minutes in the fourth quarter and was held to 6 points and three field goals in the pivotal period. Before the meltdown, Armatech built a commanding 58-42 lead at the end of the third canto.

Elmer Esdrelon led the third-quarter assault, dropping four triples and scoring 14 points, as Armatech broke the second-half standoff, 26-26, and took a 16-point lead, putting Proa’s winning streak on the line.

However, Proa made a big comeback in the fourth canto behind the backcourt duo of Keoni Chariton and Quincy Johnson. Chariton scored Proa’s first three baskets, while Armatech went cold in the first five minutes of the fourth period. Johnson added 6 points, while Chariton got 4 more and three other Proa players made it to the board to foil Armatech’s upset bid.

Armatech drew only 2 points from Esdrelon in the fourth quarter, while the two other field goals came from Bruce Berline and Junar Guiab, who scored when AXE Proa was already in control of the driver’ seat.

Chariton top-scored in Proa’s come-from-behind win, nailing 15 points, while Johnson also finished in twin digits with his 13. Esdrelon had 28 for Armatech.

Meanwhile, Mariana Resort got a free win via forfeiture over San Roque to improve to a 4-3 record after. San Roque, which dropped to a 1-5 card, failed to get enough players in time for the second game of the night.

AXE Proa 68 – Chariton 15, Johnson 13, Alegre 8, Barcinas 8, Lizama 4, Dela Rosa 4, Tudela 3, Libuw 2, Aranda 2, VIllacrusis 2.

Armatech 65 – Esdrelon 28, McCain 9, De Dios 6, Talania 5, Berline 4, Gabaldon 3, Manalo 2, Guiab 2.

Scoring by quarters:
11-13, 26-26, 42-58, 68-65.
