Bubble Bxtt rules Kanoa women’s caging

Bubble Bxtt’s Marie Javier drives to the baseline against Yoloswag Attack’s Lily Williams during the fourth quarter of their title game in the Kanoa caging last Saturday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo)Bubble Bxtt bagged the championship in the 2013 Kanoa Resort Women’s Basketball Summer League after defeating Yoloswag Attack, 56-51, in the one-game finals last Saturday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.

It was a come-from-behind title win for Bubble Bxtt’s, which faced a 16-point deficit at halftime before managing to grab the lead midway in the second half and surviving Yoloswag Attack’s late rally to clinch the championship trophy.

Yoloswag Attack launched its own comeback bid in the last two minutes of the fourth canto, trimming Bubble Bxtt’s 10-point advantage to a deuce, 51-53. Bubble Bxtt had a chance to put away the game for good when it posted its biggest lead at the 53-43 tally, but went trigger happy in the closing minutes of the finals, opting to take shots instead of melting down the clock. Bubble Bxtt missed all those attempts, while Kaylani Lebria scored a string of 8 points to threaten Bubble Bxxt.

Lebria started the blast with a triple, followed by an and-1 play, and then a free layup off a Bubble Bxtt passing error from the backcourt. Now behind by only 2 with 23 seconds left, Jaime Mendoza advertently committed a foul in Jeralyn Castillo to stop the clock. Castillo was eventually given two free throws, plus possession, as Mendoza held on to her jersey and referee Gabriel White called it an advantage foul.

Castillo missed both charities, keeping Yoloswag Attack’s hopes alive, as the former only needed to either steal the ball or give up another preemptive foul to regain the leather. However, Yoloswag Attack did neither, as Castillo managed to get away from her defenders before throwing up a prayer from the right sideline and making the bank triple as time expired.

Castillo top-scored for Bubble Bxtt with her 17 points. Her layup put Bubble Bxtt on top for the first time, 36-34, 10:14 left in the second half. Yoloswag Attack was stuck to 34 points for about three minutes to lose the driver’s seat and eventually the title match.

Mikki Kautz and Friendly Joy Pena provided support to Castillo, adding 15 and 10 markers, respectively. Mendoza paced Yoloswag Attack with her 16 markers, while Lily Williams chipped in 12 and Lebria contributed 11.

Bubble Bxtt 56 – Castillo 17, Kautz 14, Pena 10, Alegre 4, Javier 4.

Yoloswag Attack 51 – Mendoza 16, Williams 12, Lebria 11, Kautz 8, Samson 2.

Scoring by halves: 11-27, 56-51
