MHS, MBA rout Kagman in JV caging

Marianas High School and Marianas Baptists Academy whipped Kagman High School in the junior varsity games in the 2013-2014 MISO Girls Basketball League last week at the MHS Gymnasium.

The Lady Dolphins and the Lady Ayuyus played last Friday with the former silencing the latter in the last three quarters to notch the 14-point win, 27-13 MHS improved to a 2-0 record, as it also prevailed over MBA (via forfeiture) in the opening week, while Kagman dropped to a 0-3 slate.

The Lady Ayuyus absorbed their third straight defeat in the JV division despite a good start against the Lady Dolphins. Kagman led, 13-8, behind the three triples of Natasha Ngirausui and two field goals of Kelsey Lizama. Strangely, the Lady Ayuyus failed to buy a bucket in the remaining three quarters of the match.

Ngirausui pulled up for more shots from downtown in the last 24 minutes of play, but she either overshot her mark or threw airballs. The rest of his teammates tried attempting inside, but to no avail, as the Lady Ayuyus still need to work on their fundamentals (such as dribbling and passing) to square off for shots.

The Lady Dolphins, though they also committed several turnovers, were more cohesive, giving extra passes and having better positioning inside to connect high-percentage shots. MHS also had open looks off short jumpers to recover from the 5-point deficit in the first quarter.

Shaina Abadilla top-scored for MHS with her 8 points, while Martina Ada chipped in 7. Three other Lady Dolphins made it to the board with Alexandria Vergara contributing 4 point and Patricia Abantao and Maria Dalusong adding 3 and 2, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the Kagman-MBA game last Thursday, the Ayuyus also went on a offensive meltdown, allowing the Storms to cruise to a 44-15 victory.

Again, the Lady Ayuyus enjoyed the driver’s seat in the first quarter, 12-7, only to go scoreless in the second and fourth quarter. Ngirausui hit her shots from beyond the arc, anew, early in the game, firing three triples. Kagman’s other field goal also came from a triple, courtesy of Jocielyn Lacay, and the Ayuyus went on to take a 5-point edge against MBA.

MBA made only one triple (from Denise Samson) and drew one field goal apiece from Chris Obaldo and Vanessa Bartolo. Samson and Bartolo also scored in the second canto, drilling 4 points apiece, while Kagman was off, giving MBA a 15-12 advantage at the break.

Then at the start of the second half, Ngirausui got her fourth triple of the night, but that also served as the last basket for Kagman, while Samson and Vanessa Bartolo drew help from three other teammates to complete the rout.

Samson led MBA with her 16 points, Vanessa Bartolo and Obaldo contributed 10 each, while Chelsea Bartolo and Naomi Ito had 4 and 2 markers, respectively.
