PAPUA NEW GUINEA - UMPIRING WORKSHOP

Umpire Workshop Participants

The workshop was interactive with the participants having full involvement. A new interactive powerpoint presentation was used as well as an umpiring DVD to make a visual impact.

Day one touched on rules, how to umpire, positioning of the umpire, areas of control, supporting your colleague. Other topics such as player safety, pro-active umpiring and game management were covered.

The morning of day two covered how to run a tournament and the roles of the officials. Important administrative tasks such as how to fill out a match sheet were also discussed.

Day two afternoon saw a comprehensive look at the key skills of hockey, especially set plays such as penalty corners, free hits within the attacking 23m area.

On Thursday evening a Technical meeting was held for all the participating tournament teams. This was an opportunity to summarise some of the key areas covered in the workshop to be emphasised and an chance for those who were still travelling and missed the workshop to ask questions on rules.

The CDO was impressed with the transfer of knowledge and the immediate implimentation of learning into the practical application on the field displayed at the National Championships.
