The 2008 Elementary school basketball competition for boys commenced on Monday, February 4th with an opening ceremony held at the Palau National Gym @ 4:00 pm. One of the teachers of SDA elementary school did the opening and closing prayer. Shell NBL Vice President Eugene Termeteet who is also a parent of one of the players did the opening remarks, while Kambes Kasolei of the STUN office (Tobacco Control and Prevention office) which are the main sponsors of the program did special remarks. PBF Vice President Topps Sungino did the closing remarks. A total of 30 FIBA Oceania donated basketballs (Sizes 5,6,7) were donated to the schools to help them with their basketball programs. STUN office sponsored T-Shirts for all participants and trophies for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, sportsmanship award and coach of the year award. Koror State Government youth division will be running the program in their preparation for the Koror State Junior Basketball League after school program due to start in April. A free throw competiton was conducted and the prizes were again FIBA Oceania basketballs for the schools. On Tuesday, February 5th, Koror Elementary School (KES A Stars) succesfully defended their title in the opening game by winning over last years 2nd place SDA Kings by a score of 55-26. All PBF sponsors were acknowledged namely; Palau National Government, Palau National Olympic Committee, Oceania National Olympic Committee, FIBA Oceania, Palau Basketball Federation main sponsor Shell Palau, Elementary school competition sponsors; STUN (Stop Tobacco Use Now) office and Koror State Government youth division. Special recognition went to the players, coaches/teachers, parents and the fans who are the main focus of the proram. PBF theme for all basketballs in Palau is: WE ARE ALL WINNERS WITH CHARACTER FIRST AND A POSITIVE ATTITUDE.
