ASCO Cup Finals Series - 29 Oct 04

The Tonga ASCO CUP Australian Football Association Finals were concluded on Friday
29th October with 2 night game Finals at Teufaiva Stadium. A modest crowd saw a more improved display of Australian Rules Football compared to the initial games played way back in August when the competition began it's inaugural year.

Game 1 and a major set back for Vaololoa having forfeited their semi final position to Apifo'ou after not attending the game on time. This was just one of the main set backs the school children experienced due to poor supervision of both the Junior and Senior Teams. The first Junior Semi Final saw Liahona just get over the line against a very fortunate Apifo'ou. The final score line was:

G B Total G B Total
Liahona 6 7 43 Apifo'ou 5 3 33

Game 2 kicked off the first Senior Semi Final played between Vaololoa and Apifo'ou. The Vaololoa team was sent another huge blow when their Coach did not turn up for the game giving the TAFA staff no other alternative but to penalise the team as per the ASCO Cup Rules; Teams must provide 1 field umpire per game otherwise a 3 goal penalty will be given to the offending team. The Valoloa team tried hard but in the end Apifo'ou has played far more football over the recent weeks and was the better team on the day. The final score line was:

G B Total G B Total
Valoloa 2 2 14 Apifo'ou 15 8 98

Game 3 was the one Talafo'ou Juniors have been waiting for all year, the First ever TAFA Junior Grand Final. Talafo'ou, as minor premiers, had progressed straight to the final and were up against Liahona who were the winners of a tight Game 1. Liahona's depth proved too much for the improved Talafo'ou who had plenty of opportunities to score but were inaccurate when it counted. The final score line was:

G B Total G B Total
Liahona 6 6 42 Talafo'ou 1 4 10

Game 4, Liahona v's Apifo'ou under lights. This game displayed some of the most courageous and free flowing football to date, teams linking up with handballs, kicking to leading targets and taking big marks in the forward line. The defense was ferocious with some solid spoils and great tackling. Apifo'ou tried hard all game but ran out of legs in the second half, having worked hard in the semi final earlier in the night. The final score was:

G B Total G B Total
Liahona 9 4 58 Apifo'ou 4 5 29

Congratulations to the Principal and the Coach of Liahona and the entire school. Liahona have been the most proactive school in this years competition and deserve the winners computer worth T$1,500. They proved that students, with a little guidance and supervision from their coach Lolo and assistance from the TAFA development officer, can achieve great results over the course of 1 football season.
