Corey Payne: Toyota Cup a breeding ground for code's new stars
I first played Jersey Flegg for the Bulldogs in 2001. The Flegg, which has since been renamed the Toyota Cup, is a now a national under-20s competition.
In that year, the Bulldogs Jersey Flegg side went on to win the premiership under the guidance of Ricky Stuart. The team included many players that have gone on to have great careers such as Jonathon Thurston, Roy Asotasi, Rocky Elsom and Ben Harris (who won a Flegg, reserve grade and first grade premierships with the Bulldogs before winning a premiership with Bradford in the English Super League).
I feel pretty fortunate to have been a part of that side in my first year of grade football and have only good memories of the competition.
The Toyota Cup competition is a breeding ground for the game’s next generation of stars.
