Day Two Round-Up

15U Boys

British Columbia 63 – 55 Newfoundland

• Team British Columbia got things underway on day two of the National Championships, beating Newfoundland 63 – 55 in a battle of the coastal provinces. Between both teams, seven players finished in double-digit scoring, with Newfoundland’s Jordan Ryan tallying a game-high 18 points on six-for-13 shooting from the field. B.C. received 13 points from both Mason Bourcier and Jason Tantengco.

Ontario 87 – Quebec 80

• Team Ontario held back a late push by Team Quebec to hold on for an 87 – 80 victory. Ontario was led by a commanding performance by Andrew Nembhard, who finished the game with 34 points, including four-of-seven from three-point territory; RJ Barrett scored 26 points to give Ontario a formidable one-two scoring punch. Not to be outdone, Kentebe Farquhar scored a game-high 36 points for Team Quebec, though the effort was not enough as Ontario edged away in game’s final minutes.

Nova Scotia 80 – Saskatchewan 55

• Nova Scotia outdueled Team Saskatchewan, 80 – 55 on day two. Saskatchewan featured the game-high scoring leader, Jashon Henry, 18 points carried much of his team’s offense in the loss. Team Nova Scotia responded with a balanced attack on offense; eight players scored in between six and 16 points, giving the victors quality and quantity in their scoring-options.

Manitoba 83 – Alberta 79

• Manitoba rode a trio of skilled scorers to 83 – 79 win over Team Alberta. Alberta hanged in tough the entire game, even leading at times in the game’s dying minutes, but had to contend with stellar games from Daniel Sackey, Emmanuel Akot and Deng Gulak, who finished with 28, 25 and 17 points, respectively. Gulak also flashed his muscle in the paint, leading the game in rebounds as well with nine. Quebec was led by 17 points by Justin Bediako.

New Brunswick 87 – Newfoundland 64

• New Brunswick wrapped up the 15U Boy’s pool play with a big win over Newfoundland, 87 – 64. New Brunswick was led by 24 points from Carlo Theriault, including seven-of-10 shooting from the field and a perfect eight-for-eight from the foul line. Turnovers and allowing offensive rebounds prevented Newfoundland from contesting New Brunswick’s lead, despite four players scoring in double figures. Emanuel Ring led Newfoundland with 15 points.

 

15U Girls

New Brunswick 36 – Alberta 33

• With neither team being able to get into their groove on offense, New Brunswick simply outlasted Alberta in a low-scoring, 36 – 33 affair. The victors were led by eight points apiece from Reese Baxendale, Megan Stewart and Bailey Black; Forward Jessica Zarowny led Alberta with a game-high 12 points.

Saskatchewan 95 – Nova Scotia 77

• Saskatchewan withstood four double-digit scorers from Team Nova Scotia to take a 95 – 77 victory on day two of the National Championships. Despite their balanced attack, Nova Scotia had no answer on the glass, being outrebounded by Saskatchewan 43 – 23 and giving up 29 and 23 points to Emily Dewey and Lauryn Prokop, respectively.

British Columbia 75 – Manitoba 33

• Manitoba found itself on the wrong end of one of day two’s largest margins of defeat, falling to a very formidable Team British Columbia, 75 – 33. While British Columbia featured a team in which every player scored within their balanced offensive attack, Manitoba struggled at times to find their rhythm, connecting on only 22% of their field goals as a team. Size was an issue as well for Team Manitoba, as British Columbia took up residency in the paint on route to a 59 to 26 rebounding advantage for the victors.

Ontario 59 – Quebec 37

• In the day’s third battle of Ontario versus Quebec, the 15U Girl’s continued the winning vibes for Team Ontario, besting their Eastern neighbours, 59 – 37. Hanna Hall led Ontario with a game-high 15 points on six-for-nine shooting; Quebec was led by 12 points from Eleanore Marciszewski, who did most of her work from the foul line, going seven-for-eight on free-throws.

Prince Edward Island 66 – Alberta 64

• Prince Edward won a wild game over Team Alberta to finish off day two action on the competition court, beating the tournament host province 66 – 64. P.E.I. nearly blew their late lead, being out-scored 36 to 27 in the second half, but held on to a slim lead to save the victory. Jessica Zarowny scored 12 points for Alberta – including her team’s first eight points of the game, but Alberta’s defense had no answer for P.E.I.’s Lexie Macinnis, who scored a game-high 25 points in her team’s win.

 

17U Boys

Newfoundland 75 – British Columbia 56

• Newfoundland got day two started on the 17U Boy’s bracket in style, outdueling British Columbia 75 – 56. Relying heavily on their starting unit, Newfoundland was led in scoring by 17 points by Liam Dunphy; Dunphy and Cole Long played all 40 minutes of action for Team Newfoundland. B.C.’s Graham nearly matched Dunphy and Cole in playing time, missing only 22 seconds from a complete game while recording a game-high 18 points.

Ontario 90 – Quebec 67

• After dropping their day one match-up to New Brunswick, Team Ontario roared back with a decisive victory over Team Quebec, 90 – 67. Ignas Slykas scored 19 points for Ontario, with Muhammed Kabeya adding 18 points in the victory. Kevin Barreau scored 19 points for Quebec, matching Slykas, but ultimately lacking the back-up firepower to keep up with their central Canadian rivals.

Manitoba 76 – New Brunswick 60

• Torrez McKoy’s 23 points led the game, and his team to victory over Team New Brunswick, with Manitoba taking a 76 – 60 win on day two. New Brunswick did its part to put the team in a position to claim the top seed in Pool A, limiting turnovers and featuring a balanced offense led by 14 points from Stanley Mayambo. Unfortunately, for the upstart Maritimes team, an 18 – 7 Manitoba-advantage on the offensive glass gave the victors a considerable advantage in second-chance points – enough to handily beat New Brunswick by the game’s end.

Nova Scotia 71 – Prince Edward Island 68

• Nova Scotia edged out a close game against their Maritime rivals, finishing 71 – 68. Nova Scotia received a 20-point outing from Alex Carson in the victory, while P.E.I. boasted two 21-point scorers in Jack MacAuley and Kenan Wilkie. In the end, it was Nova Scotia’s depth in scoring that outlasted P.E.I.’s tip-of-the-spear attack.

British Columbia 89 – Saskatchewan 57

• Team British Columbia took a commanding victory over Western Canadian rivals Saskatchewan, beating them 89 – 57 to cap off the 17U Boy’s bracket for day one. Carter Millar led the game in scoring with 24 points, but Saskatchewan’s high-scorer receiver little other support in filling the basket; none of his teammates cracked 10 points and only two players scored more than four points. Team B.C. was led by 18 points from Graham Smith.

 

17U Girls

New Brunswick 59 – Newfoundland 56

• New Brunswick fought back from a three-point deficit with five minutes to play to edge out Newfoundland 59 – 56 to kick off day two of the 17U Girl’s bracket. Jennifer Newman led the way for New Brunswick, tallying a game-high 16 points and 7 rebounds. Newfoundland’s Kelsey Moore led her team with 14 points.

British Columbia 62 – Alberta 46

• Alberta’s round-robin slate concluded with a 62 – 46 loss to British Columbia, moving the hosting team to the fourth seed and their western neighbours to the third seed in Pool A. Jessica Jones led B.C. with 16 points with teammate Brooklyn Lequalt adding 14 points and a team-high six rebounds. Alberta was led by 12 points by Megan Ahlstrom in the loss, which dropped the tournament hosts to 0-2 in pool play.

Nova Scotia 84 – Quebec 63

• The final 84 – 63 win for Team Nova Scotia obscures what was an extremely tight game for the first 35 minutes of play. Halfway through the third quarter, Quebec held on to a 45 – 44 lead over Nova Scotia; the Maritimers were eventually able to put their offense into fifth gear, scoring 40 points in the game’s final 15 minutes while Quebec’s strong effort ultimately faded down the stretch. Nova Scotia’s Alyson Fulton scored a game-high 23 points while Frederique Beauchamp led all Quebec scorers with 18 points on six-for-12 shooting.

Ontario 72 – Manitoba 55

• Ontario completed their winning day by besting Manitoba 72 – 55. Jordan Tully scored a game-high 18 points – including 10 points from the foul line alone – for Team Manitoba. Not to be outdone, Team Ontario’s Bridget Mulholland went a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line, on her way to a team-high 15 points. The game became somewhat of a foul-shooting contest, with the two teams combining to shoot 63 shots from the line; Ontario’s foul-shooting accuracy of 84% proved too effective for Manitoba to readily counter to prevent the loss.

Saskatchewan 75 – Newfoundland 49

• Saskatchewan rounded out the 17U Girl’s bracket with a 75 – 49 win over Team Newfoundland. After trailing by three heading into the second quarter, Newfoundland had trouble catching up to their opposition, allowing Saskatchewan to go on a 21 – 10 run in the second quarter, giving Saskatchewan a heavy advantage at halftime. Saskatchewan’s Nicole Konieczny led the game with 15 points on seven-for-10 shooting from the field.
