DAY FIVE ROUND-UP

Day Five Round-Up

15U Girls

New Brunswick 63 – Manitoba 49

  • Reese Baxendale once again proved to be a reliable offensive-force for New Brunswick as the Maritimers kicked off day five playoff action in the 15U Girl’s playoffs with a 63 – 49 win over Manitoba. Baxendale scored 20 points on six-for-11 shooting along with six rebounds and six steals. Manitoba was led by a 13-point, seven-rebound morning from Taylor Reynolds. New Brunswick advances to play Nova Scotia for fifth place while Manitoba is set to play for seventh place against Alberta at 9:00 a.m.

Nova Scotia 68 – Alberta 50

  • Nova Scotia advanced to the fifth-place game versus New Brunswick, beating Alberta 68 – 50. Maia Timmons and Ariel Provo each scored 18 points for the winners, but it was the team’s heavy-lifting at the foul line that gave them a big advantage as Nova Scotia connected on 17-of-24 foul shots as a team. Alberta, who will now take on Manitoba in the seventh-place game, recorded a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double from Amy Mazutinec. Alberta will face Manitoba for seventh place.

Newfoundland 57 – Prince Edward Island 47

  • Newfoundland claimed ninth place with a 57 – 47 victory over Team P.E.I. to conclude the tournament for both teams. Kayla Fisher led Newfoundland with 13 points while Kelsey Crocker and Sarah Hiscock each recorded 10 rebounds in the victory. Prince Edward Island was led by 22 points from Alexis MacInnis but it was too little, too late for the eventual tenth-place finishers.

Saskatchewan 83 – Quebec 68

  • Quebec came out gunning, but a strong Team Saskatchewan rode a big second quarter to a dominant 83 – 68 victory on day five. Led by 23 points on 11-for-15 shooting from Emily Dewey , Saskatchewan used its slight advantage in rebounds, turnovers and field-goal accuracy to slowly but surely edge away from their opponents. Eleanore Marciszewski scored 18 points for Quebec, who will face British Columbia for the bronze medal. Saskatchewan will advance to the finals to take on Ontario in a battle between an upstart team from the Prairies and the reigning 15U champions.

Ontario 54 – British Columbia 39

  • Ontario advances to the gold medal game for a chance to repeat as the 15U National Champions, after beating Team British Columbia 54 – 39 in the final match-up of day five. Michelle Istead had a game-high 18-points on eight-for-nine shooting in the big win. Team Ontario clicked to the tune of 48% accuracy from the floor, while British Columbia struggled to a 25% line. Lindsey Bott had 10 points for British Columbia. Ontario will face a strong Saskatchewan team in the 15U Girl’s championship game, while B.C. looks to end on a high-note with a bronze-medal win over Quebec.

15U Boys

British Columbia 61 – New Brunswick 53

  • New Brunswick nearly completed the comeback over Team B.C. in the first 15U Boy’s match-up of day five, before falling short in their attempt, losing 61 – 53. With neither team really finding their rhythm on offense, B.C.’s quick 20 to 11 lead at the end of the first quarter slowly eroded to a point where New Brunswick had a shot to regain the lead, trailing by only four points with five minutes of play remaining, before ultimately falling short. Jason Tantangco and Jaden Gregg each scored 11 for British Columbia. Brett Curtis also scored 11 points to lead New Brunswick. New Brunswick will face Saskatchewan for seventh place; British Columbia moves on to face Alberta for fifth place at 11:15 a.m.

Alberta 69 – Saskatchewan 56

  • Jashon Henry powered Alberta to a 69 – 56 win over their Saskatchewan neighbours, sealing a match-up with British Columbia on day six for fifth place. Henry scored a game-high 27 points on 10-for-16 shooting adding five steals in the win; Saskatchewan, who will now face New Brunswick for seventh place, received 15 points apiece from Max Russell and Adong Makuoi, with the latter adding nine rebounds in the contest.

Newfoundland 62 – Prince Edward Island 39

  • Just as their 15U Girl’s counterparts had done on day five, the 15U Boy’s team from Newfoundland finished their tournament with a win over Team Prince Edward Island for ninth place. Jason Thompson logged a game-high 18 points with six rebounds and five assists for Newfoundland while Jordan Reid led the tenth-place finishers with 13 points on five-for-11 shooting.

Ontario 83 – Nova Scotia 56

  • Ontario will return to the gold medal game to defend their 2013 15U championship, having beaten Nova Scotia in the semi-finals by a score of 83 – 56. RJ Barrett exploded for 33 points on 14-for-23 shooting, 12 rebounds and five steals. Jaydan Smith led Nova Scotia with 16 points and four steals. Ontario will take on Quebec for the gold medal on the final day of Nationals; Nova Scotia will fight for bronze against Manitoba.

Quebec 77 – Manitoba 59

  • Manitoba received solid outings from stand-outs Daniel Sackey (14 points) and Emmanuel Akot (13 points), but was unable to overcome Quebec’s barrage of three pointers, falling to la belle province 77 – 59. Manitoba actually out-rebounded Quebec by a significant 46 to 31 margin. Luguentz Dort had another solid night, leading his team once again with 17 points. Quebec will take on Ontario in the 15U Boy’s gold medal game; Manitoba will take on New Brunswick for bronze.

17U Girls

British Columbia 79 – Prince Edward Island 55

  • After a pedestrian first quarter that saw British Columbia and Prince Edward Island score a combined 18 points, British Columbia erupted to score 69 points over the final three quarters to win 79 – 55. Though featuring two of the game’s top-scorers in Jade Yeo (17 Points) and Jenna Mae Ellsworth (16 points), Team P.E.I. lacked the depth to outlast a bigger team from British Columbia; B.C. featured four players in double-digit figures, led by Jessica Hanson with 16 points. British Columbia will face Ontario in the fifth-place game on the final day of the National Championships; P.E.I. will face Nova Scotia for seventh place.

Ontario 62 – Nova Scotia 49

  • After a slow first quarter of play, Ontario turned up the heat just enough to reach for a 62 – 49 win over Nova Scotia. Team Nova Scotia got a big performance from Tykeia Beals, who recorded a game-high 16 points, but were unable to convert their opportunities late in the game with the team shooting a combined 32% from the field. Ontario received a well-rounded effort from Kendra VanLeeuwen and Oksana Gouchie-Provencher, who both finished with 12 points. Ontario advances to face Team B.C. for fifth place while Nova Scotia will try to regroup with a win over Prince Edward Island for a seventh-place finish.

Manitoba 75 – Saskatchewan 59

  • Though they led by four points at half-time, Saskatchewan faded in the second half, allowing Manitoba to advance to the gold medal game with a 75 – 59 victory. Manitoba showcased its depth of scoring with five players finishing with at least 10 points, led by Jordan Tully with a 15-point, 15-rebound double-double. Libby Epoch led Team Saskatchewan with 13 points, adding seven rebounds and three assists. Saskatchewan will face Team Alberta in the bronze medal game while Manitoba advances to the finals against a strong entry from Quebec.

Quebec 59 – Alberta 41

Quebec advances to the gold medal game with a decisive 59 – 41 victory over Team Alberta. Juliette Gauthier led Quebec with 13 points. Alberta, led by eight points from Megan Ahlstrom, will take on Saskatchewan for a shot at a bronze medal finish.

New Brunswick 64 – Newfoundland 44

  • With New Brunswick going on a 10 to two run in the first five minutes of the game, Newfoundland struggled from the get-go to catch up to their Maritime neighbours, eventually falling 64 – 44. Eva Tumwine scored 17 points for New Brunswick in the win, adding five rebounds, while teammate Rita Soffee had a cool 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. New Brunswick finishes the tournament in ninth place while Newfoundland falls to tenth place.

17U Boys

Alberta 79 – Prince Edward Island 68

  • Alberta was able to stave off a last-place finish in the 17U Boy’s bracket, beating Prince Edward Island in the ninth-place game, 79 – 68. While the Islander’s fielded the two top scorers of the game in Kenan Wilkie (19 points) and Noah Giddings (17 points), Alberta’s depth of scoring options allowed the host team to leave the tournament on a higher note. In their final game of the tournament, Cole Knudsen scored 14 points, Awat Piom tallied 13 points and 15 rebounds and Aher Aguak scored 13 points.

British Columbia 98 – Newfoundland 90

  • Tyus Barfoot led the way with 27 points on tremendous 11-for-13 shooting from the floor, propelling British Columbia past Newfoundland, 98 – 90. Barfoot had plenty of help in the winning effort with Graham Miller and Graham Smith each scoring 17 points and combining for 16 rebounds. It was a high-scoring affair in every sense, with Newfoundland recording three players with at least 15 points, led by Liam Dunphy’s 23 and Brett Warren’s 20 points. Alas, the taller Team B.C. got their work done on the boards as well, out-rebounding their opponents by 12 and giving themselves just enough room to pull off the win. Team B.C. will play Quebec for fifth place; Newfoundland takes on Saskatchewan at 9:00 a.m. for the seventh-place game.

Quebec 97 – Saskatchewan 55

  • Quebec rode a big 25-point first quarter to a dominant 97 – 55 victory over their Prairie neighbours from Saskatchewan. William Boyer-Richard led the way for Quebec with a game-high 19 points on seven-for-12 shooting from the floor; Carter Millar paced Saskatchewan with 16 points and seven rebounds. Quebec will now look to finish in the top half of their tournament pool, taking on Team B.C. for fifth place, while Saskatchewan will battle Newfoundland for seventh place.

Ontario 74 – New Brunswick 64

  • Ontario redeemed its tournament-opening loss to New Brunswick, this time besting the Maritimers 74 – 64 on route to the gold medal game. Ignas Slyka once again led Ontario in scoring with 20 points, including three-for-five from beyond the arc, while New Brunswick’s Jack Tilley scored a game-high 21 points in the loss. New Brunswick gave itself a chance late in the game with an aggressive, pressing defense, but Ontario was able to weather the storm and avoid the collapse. New Brunswick will take on Nova Scotia for the bronze medal; Ontario will battle a strong Team Manitoba for the gold.

Manitoba 83 – Nova Scotia 65

  • Manitoba continued its strong tournament with a commanding win over Nova Scotia, downing the Maritimers 83 – 65. William Kohler had a break-out performance, totalling a game-high 32 points with 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and block. Nova Scotia had three players in double-digit scoring figures, with Alex Carson logging a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double and Chris Towle adding 12 as well. Manitoba will take on Ontario for the gold medal in the final game of the final day, while Nova Scotia will battle for bronze against New Brunswick.
