On short notice, we were able to make our way into the gates of the Local Food office. Taking his time off his busy schedule, we had the opportunity to interview the executive director, Mr. Rainer Jimmy.
Fortunately, we had the opportunity to witness this event at the island food community of Pohnpei. The island food community of Pohnpei has been providing local food over the past six years until this day. The purpose of this community is to promote local food.
"We plant, clean, harvest cook and eat," Jimmy says.
Being part of the Pohnpeian culture, it was once said that the food or local food of the island help maintain the cultural affairs, but lately Jimmy has a change.
"Now days youths aren't planting and eating local food, they're into foreign imports," Jimmy explains.
As of it is, changing local food is like changing lifestyle and physical activities. For instant, change in diet local food to refined process food.
"We're trying to encourage youths to grow and eat local produce. It's much healthier," Jimmy said.
Local food also represent the pride of every women and men on the island.
So, with this department, it helps strengthen the culture by preserving and maintaining the way us Micronesians go locally.
