UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT
A very belated welcome to the section called Under the Spotlight. We will be asking a well-known identity within the boundaries of the Southern NSW AFL to comment on several issues relating to football and other social aspects. It is intended to be both serious and light hearted and I hope that all readers find it both interesting and amusing. We kick off the first interview for the year with President of the RUA, and current umpire, Rob Wilson.
Who do you follow in the AFL
What are your thought’s some AFL player’s behaviour ie: Heath Shaw / Steve Johnson / Barry Hall
The AFL is committed to starting two new franchises – one on the Gold Coast and the other in Western Sydney. Do you think that both will be successful or not.
The local RUA is having problems getting sufficient numbers for all games in the area. How do you think clubs can help in this matter.
What are your thoughts on the Montgomery Report that has been handed down in the last couple of months.
Where / what is your favourite watering hole
Who is your favourite entertainer of all time
What is your favourite food and beverage
What is your favourite holiday destination
Greg Norman, Casey Stoner and Michael Bogurt are all great international sportsmen that represent Australia. Place in your order of importance and why
Norman – Outstanding golfer over as long period of time, excellent ambassador
Stoner – To be World Champ at a very young age in such a high risk adrenalin sport
Bogurt – Great talent, will only get better

Clubs must commit to supplying umpires to not only just umpire own games, but be involved and develop skills and techniques which could help change the culture towards umpires. Need to encourage star players to be involved, they are the ones admired by the kids. Both will work because the AFL will keep pumping money in. The Gold Coast appears to be structured better and in an expanding market. Western Sydney may have the population but I question their commitment to the AFL, lets hope it doesn’t become another AFL Park. I feel the Olympic Stadium could be better utilised.Johnson’s case was handled well by Geelong, he served his time. Shaw is lucky to be playing with Collingwood, they have shown their reluctance in punishing players, they are a disgrace to the AFL. Hall obviously has issues, but his actions cannot be tolerated, lucky to only get 7 weeks.Essendon
