The Year That Was- Illawarra Lions
The Year That Was- Illawarra Lions
2012: Eighth- 4 wins, 14 losses
Highest Polling Player at Phelan Medal: Ryan Price & Jimmy Weavers (Equal 16th- 8 votes)
Positives: They showed some mettle at various stages to cope with the loss of Jeremy Daniher, Barron Hanson and last year’s coach of the year in Trevor Burnett. Their Under 18s made the Grand Final and there are some class footballers there, as well as Rising Star nominee, Jacob Brookfield.
Negatives: The Lions went backwards this year after winning eight games last season. The move of leading goalkicker, Ryan Price to defence typified their mindset at the back-end of the season. They either butchered the ball or could not get enough of it against the top sides.
Areas for improvement: Getting some of their Under 18s into their senior side is the first step. They need more foot soldiers to assist Jimmy Weavers. Ken Ewen-Chappell would be disappointed with his season and will be keen to make amends in 2013.
Overall Grade: D
