The 2014 Commonwealth Games ended on a high note for PNG on 1st August with the second fastest ever 4*400m relay time for PNG men. The team of Nelson Stone, Theo Piniau, Kaminiel Matlaun and Wala Gime ran an outstanding 3min 10.30 seconds. “This performance is not a surprise said President Tony Green and the exciting thing is that these boys can go much faster. Both Theo and Kaminiel are improving and competition for places in the team next year will be very strong with John Rivan expected to be back after injury and Kevin Kapmatana also staking his claim for a place”.
Other top performances at the Games were recorded by Toea Wisil in the semi final of the 100m where she edged out Australian record holder Melissa Breen with a time of 11.44secs to Breen’s 11.45; and by Kaminiel Matlaun who broke the national junior 800m record that he set in Rarotonga in June with another great time of 1min 52.36 seconds. Donna Koniel was also in good form in the 800m clocking her best time ever of 2min 14.42 secs. Wala Gime clocked a time of 14.64 secs in the 110m hurdles which though outside his national record time of 14.04, is still a very good performance. Andipas Georasi made a big improvement in his favourite event, clocking 4min 05.30 seconds for the 1500m.
