Some very good results were achieved this weekend at the Gold Coast in the last competition for the PNG Athletes before they head to Port Moresby on Friday for the Opening Ceremony. Toea Wisil led the way on Saturday by equaling her national record in the 200m with a time of 23.46 seconds and followed this up with a very fast 100m of 11.49 on Sunday. Donna Koniel was also in fine form recording another high quality personal best of 2min 08.77 seconds in a very good 800m race where she was just pipped to the line by New Zealander Olivia Burdon. Nelson Stone clocked his best times of the year in both the 100m (10.77) and 400m (47.81)
A series of personal best times were achieved in the sprint events with Adrine Monagi leading the way with a big personal best 12.11 secs in the 100m and 25.18secs in the 200m. Monagi who has established herself as the gold medal favourite in the seven event heptathlon has improved consistently throughout the year and clocked an excellent 14.73 secs in the 100m hurdles last week. Karo Iga continues to impress in the Pole Vault and recorded another clearance of 4.10m on Sunday. Top jumps prospect RellieKaputin has turned in a number of solid performances since returning from the USA late last month as she has concentrated on improving her technique in the triple and high jumps. Another athlete who continues to improve is Robson Yinambe who is preparing for the grueling ten event decathlon. The 23 year old new irelander has recently posted times of 49.75 secs in 400m and 15.77 secs for the 110m hurdles.
