Coaches Job Description, Responsibiities and Tasks

Following is a job description for those individuals interested in being a coach of one of the FSM national basketball teams for the 2007 Pacific Games in Samoa.

This document may be modified in part as required, but it will serve to provide important information for applicants.

COACHES SELECTION CRITERIA

Conduct and Lifestyle - a coach is a role model, mentor and teacher, a surrogate parent. As such a coach should be substance and violence free, an upstanding member of the community and respected by his peers, which will mean respect from the players the coach is to mentor and train.

The coach must make a commitment to be at all practices. A coach that misses practices is setting the wrong example for the players. Frequent absences may result in the coach being replaced. Coaches must enforce the no smoking, alcohol and drug requirements established by the FSMBF.

A coach does not have the authority to invite players to come out for the squad without the express approval and consent of the FSMBF or its authorized representatives.

Coaching certification, knowledge and experience and the selection criteria - the selection criteria for the coach will be - knowledge and ability to prepare the National team to a high level, a commitment to the FSMBF Development Program, availability for the period of appointment, active coach at local level in the past 3 years, OBC accredited level 1 coach (minimum) or will obtain within the first year of appointment. The criteria for selection of the assistant coach will be the same but the area of knowledge could be less provided the coach is prepared to learn throughout the term of appointment.


PROGRAM JOB DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES
FOR COACHING POSITIONS

The National Coaches, Head Coaches and the Assistant Coaches will fill vital roles in the development of current and future state players.

The aim of the program is to prepare the best possible teams for international competition through developing the players' knowledge of the game as well as skill level and physical fitness.

The general role of the National Coach and the Assistant Coach is to teach any basketball material as provided and set down by the FSMBF to develop the knowledge and standard of FSM players. Their more specific role is to prepare the best possible team for international competition. In addition they will report on all player performances to help in identifying players for future national squads.

Another part of their role will be to identify local players at junior and senior levels for possible inclusion in future national basketball squads. Additionally they will assist in the education of local basketball people of the direction of the FSMBF through inviting local coaches, parents and players to watch squad sessions and learn what is being taught. They will help to educate by explaining the program to local people.

LIST OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
-acquire the necessary knowledge and accreditation to be able to teach within the program, prepare the selected team for international competition and be able to coach the team adequately in such competition

-teach, to a high level, the content of the

-liase with local coaches on player's home programs

-establish dates, times and venues for squad camps

-select players to the program
-report as directed on squad and player performances to the FSMBF

-identify players (ongoing) for the FSMBF

-educate local basketball people on the direction and content of the FSMBF

-the Head Coach and Assistant Coach will work closely together, and also with any others, Squad Manager, etc., to ensure the program's success

-liase frequently with the FSMBF, especially regarding any problem areas in the program

-participate in an end of year review of the program
-look after and maintain in good condition any equipment provided by the FSMBF or others for use in the program


-be positive ambassadors for the FSMBF and basketball, the FSM and the sport of basketball (this includes no negative comments to media personnel)

-Run a tobacco, alcohol, and drug free program


FSMBF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR NATIONAL SQUADS

LIST OF TASKS

1.Establish dates, times and venues for all squad sessions from now until the Mini SPG Games. In this matter you should consult with all coaches and other team staff. You should work together to secure venues and arrange practice times and dates. Advise all these details to the FSMBF so that a schedule may be finalised.

2.Prepare a basketball plan to be taught to these players and provide a copy to the FSMBF and all state coaches that will be using your basketball plan to prepare players living in each state or elsewhere.

3.Operate a program that is tobacco, alcohol and substance-free.

4.Keep records of all players including attendance, tardiness, citizenship, attitude, and problems encountered.
