Cash boost for schools basketball tourney

THE Tuckers National Secondary Schools Basketball Championships yesterday received a timely boost after Goodman Fielder announced its commitment to the sport through a donation of $15,000.

For the past eight years, Goodman Fielder has been the financial backbone of the tournament sponsoring the event that has now seen an increase in participation from schools.

Fiji Basketball Association development officer Laisiasa Puamau said since gaining support from corporate bodies especially Goodman Fielder, the association had seen an increase in number of students taking up the sport as well as renewed commitments from officials and schools.

"We welcome the continuous support we've been receiving from Goodman Fielder since 2009, the investment and great return has been noticed both for the company and also for the Fiji Basketball Association," Puamau said.

He said the games would be played in Lautoka and will feature 20 schools from across the country with the furthest travelling school would be from Levuka on Ovalau Island.

Goodman Fielder general manager Chris Zaayman said the company was pleased to support sporting tournament that would help improve and develop the games in schools, communities and in Fiji as a whole.

"The contribution is towards the development of the sport which has now seen secondary school players now away overseas through scholarships," Zaayman said.

"Sponsorship as this also provides a platform for students to showcase their talents with the opportunity to further their development."
