The Guo Nian Zhong captained-National China Under-18 Women’s basketball team are ready to take on the BLK Fijian Women’s Selection at the Vodafone Arena in Suva today.

Arriving at Nadi International Airport yesterday coach Cong Xue Di told SUNsports that they are not concerned about winning as their focus is on development. The touring party consisted of 13 players and six officials.

“We played six matches against New Zealand and Australian teams, which were good for the girls,” she said. Di said they won four matches which include their triumphs over the Australian and New Zealand U19 women’s team. “We are here for a four day-tour which will include two matches and we are looking forward to it. We are here to play the Fijian national women’s team as this is part of the development of the team and also prepare us for Asian Championship in November.”

The side also has seventeen- year-old Han Xu, who stands at 2.05m and is the tallest player in the team.

“She is a high school student. She plays well in the forward position and has a very good height,” Di added.

The team through the Ministry of Education would be hosting clinics at selected schools prior to their matches.

 NAINIMA LEADS FIJI

US based-Valerie Nainima is going to captain the BLK Fijian Women Basketball Selection against the National Chinese Women Under-18 side.

Fijian Basketball Chief of Operations Laisiasa Puamau said they have roped in a few of their overseas based- players for the two matches.

“Valerie is confirmed to captain the side in the two friendly matches,” he said. “This is our preparation for the 2019 World Cup qualifiers which is in next December. For the two games we have Valerie, Miliakere Koyamainavure and Vilisi Tavui. They have come in to beef up our side.”

Puamau has urged the general public to come out in numbers and support our women in today’s clash.

“The Chinese national under- 18 women’s basketball side is a world class team and they have just returned from a successful tour in Australia and New Zealand where they have beaten both their Under-19 national women’s basketball teams,” he said.

Today’s game starts at 5.30pm and admission is free.
