Fiji to host Asian basketball champions

FIJI Basketball Federation invites members of the public to support the Fiji under-18 women's team which will play China U18 tomorrow at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

The China U18 are the Asian champions.

Fiji Basketball chief operating officer Laisiasa Puamau said: "China has completed a tour of Australia and New Zealand and they will be arriving in Fiji tomorrow (today).

"We'll be playing two matches against them and our team will be led by US-based player Valerie Nainima. The match is inline with our mid-term goals to qualify for the 2019 World Cup qualification which will be held next December. This is part of the preparation."

The Fiji National Sports Commission, meanwhile, handed a cheque for $10,000 to the Fiji Basketball Federation to host the China team.

"The funding came at a good time. We are thankful to the Government and Fiji National Sports Commission," Puamau said.

"China is a world-class team and they have defeated Australia and New Zealand junior teams. It is a big opportunity to play against a world-class team and this will tell us where we are in terms of our programs and things that need to be done."

The match will be played tomorrow at 5.30pm at the Vodafone Arena. The second match will be played on Thursday at the same venue at 10am.
