FIBA celebrates International Volunteers Day

SUVA (FIBA U18 Oceania Championships 2016) - The FIBA U18 Oceania Championships will display the best youth basketball talent in the region. Whilst there are many organisations and coordinating bodies involved, perhaps the most overlooked but biggest contributors are the volunteers that are giving up their time and effort for the development of basketball throughout the region.

With today being International Volunteer Day (IVD) it is a better time than ever to celebrate these people who give up their time for others.

IVD is a day to celebrate all volunteer efforts and express the differences that they make in all of their communities. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. The day is one of celebration and awareness of voluntary contributions. Without the time and effort of volunteers, events like the U18 Oceania Championships would not run as smoothly as they do.

This year’s tournament has over 80 volunteers managing everything from score tables, player accommodation, transport to the young floor wipers who are giving up their time to be close to the action.

Many of these same volunteers are part of the Hoops for Health and Mum’s a Hero programs here in Fiji. They give up so much for the betterment and enjoyment of others.

It is these people that give back to the community without expectation of reward that FIBA would like to thank and recognize on this day.
