Timely assistance for Basketball Fiji

Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, His Excellency Mr. Zhou Jian and Basketball Fiji’s president, Hon. Ioane Naivalurua

SUVA (Fiji) – Basketball Fiji has set its sights on improving its performance at the Pacific Games in Solomon Islands later this year.

Having finished on the podium four years ago in Samoa, both the men and women side who won bronze and silver respectively, are gunning for nothing short of a gold medal this time around.

A timely donation of Twenty Thousand Fijian dollars presented by the Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, His Excellency Mr. Zhou Jian to Basketball Fiji’s president, Hon. Ioane Naivalurua, will allow the federation to prepare the national basketball team accordingly.

In receiving the donation, Hon. Naivalurua commended the Chinese Embassy for their continuous support in progressing and developing sports.

“On behalf of Basketball Fiji, I wish to thank you for the continuous support rendered to the Federation. As a minor sport, we value the recognition and this kind donation will provide the much needed assistance to further develop the sport beyond its current boundaries and facilitate the preparation of the national teams to the Pacific Games later in the year” he said.

In his address, His Excellency Mr. Zhou Jian stressed the importance of sports saying, “Sports is not only a game, it’s more than that, it’s a way of life, it is a way of bringing people together and to surpass what can be achieved.”

He reiterated that the donation was a token of continuous friendship and support towards the federation. Furthermore, the Pacific Games in Solomon Islands have been hugely supported by the Chinese government in terms of construction and development of stadiums and other facilities.
