BFPNG Under 18 National Championships Confirmed

The Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) is inviting all affiliated associations from around the country to participate in the upcoming Under 18 Men’s and Women’s National Championships, to be held in Port Moresby from Tuesday, September 27 to Saturday, October 1 at the Taurama Aquatic Indoor Centre (TAIC).

Along with the crowning of new men’s and women’s under 18 national championship winning teams, the tournament itself will also provide an avenue for talented players to be selected into Papua New Guinea under 18 squads, as part of the preparations for the FIBA Oceania Championships to be held in Fiji, this coming December.

BFPNG advises that only affiliated associations will be given the opportunity to nominate teams, with non-affiliated center’s still having the opportunity to affiliate with the Federation before the September 2nd deadline.

BFPNG Executive Officer Joel Khalu said the championships were not just about focusing on talent identification, but also bringing together the various basketball associations from throughout the country for the betterment and development of the code.

“While there are selection spots in national squads up for grabs, this tournament is about participation and our objective is to have as many teams as possible stepping on the court, representing their associations with pride and having fun playing this great sport,” Mr. Khalu said.

“The Federation is very excited to see the level of competition that we have in this particular age group and these championships will provide a fantastic showcase of both athleticism and skill.”

“Hosting successful championships are a key component of our strategic plan and it is our objective to have multiple age divisions competing in these tournaments on an annual basis,” Mr. Khalu added.
