Junior Program a Success for 2010

Every Friday afternoon commencing October 1st 2010 Junior basketballer’s have taken to the Stade Court to participate in a beginners basketball training session and mini games.   The sessions were offered to years 6, 7 and 8 students across Port Vila following in-school clinics conducted by the NBDO's during September 2010.

Since its inception, the Friday afternoon basketball has proven popular with an average of 50 students (boys and girls) attending the courts to participate.  Kids were taught the basic basketball rules and provided with some essential skills to participate in mini- games that would conclude each afternoon session.  The coaches would focus on different skill sets each week, including passing, dribbling, shooting and defensive fundamentals, and then encourage the kids to utilise those skills in the games to conclude the session.

During the last 3 weeks of the program the children were divided into permanent teams and selected their own team names to participate in a round robin mini- tournament to conclude each session.

On the 4th December teams competed in a finals series to determine the best team for the tournament.  For the girls the Cheetahs defeated the Red Hawks in the Grand Final.  Whilst in the boys competition the All Blacks kept their undefeated status alive defeating No fear in the Grand Final.   Grand Final winners (pictured) were awarded a basketball so that they can practice their basketball skills over the holidays with their friends.

VBF thanks the National Youth Players who offered assistance in coaching the kids throughout the season.
