Edition 2 February 2018

Message from Executive Officer

Well the season has tipped off this week with a couple of minor issues.  The wet season has been a little unpredictable and with the open louvres on the back courts, and high humidity, we have experienced wet, slippery courts.  Games on Monday night on Courts 3-5 were cancelled.  We will endeavour to play as many games as we can on wet nights but if they are dangerous, we will call off games.  We aim to contact all clubs, team contacts and post relevant information on the website and facebook.  Please ensure you like the Darwin Basketball Association facebook page to receive all information promptly.  This season commences with 3 weeks grading.  After the grading period in Juniors and Seniors, teams will be allocated to Division 1, Division 2 and in some cases Division 3.  The aim is to have a reasonable amount of teams in each division so teams get to play each other 3 times before finals.  The draw for the 3 weeks grading is on the website and following grading results, the draw until September will be posted.
The FINALS for this season are on September 22nd.
I hope that each player, parent, referee, scorer and spectator enjoys this season and contributes to positive changes in our Association and clubs.
DBA is also pleased to welcome our new canteen Lessees - Michael and Maria have done some great work in the canteen and have a great healthy and affordable menu.
PLEASE READ ON TO SEE WHEN UPCOMING COURSES AND TRAINING IS BEING RUN.

Club fees - Vary depending on your club - these fees include training, club expenses, presentations etc.

Game fees - payable for EVERY game.  Juniors $7, Seniors $13, League $15

There seems to be some confusion regarding age groups.
  • Age groups in Basketball are determined by the year you were born, regardless of when in the year you were born.
  • The age grouping in basketball cover 2 years of birth.
  • There are no cut offs through out the year depending on when the season runs. (this is confusing as other sports can have cut offs but basketball is a year long sport and not a seasonal sport so it is determined by born in xxxx year.
  • Therefore all children playing in a grade will be born in either the top age bracket (referred to as "top age") or the younger will be in the bottom age bracket (referred to as "bottom age")
  • Basketball uses the terms Under 10, 12, 14 etc - this means the player cannot be turning that age in that year.  eg a player in the UNDER 12 cannot turn 12 in the year the competition finishes.
  • The current comp finishes in September 2018.
  • The next competition finishes in April 2019 - therefore there will be another age change in September and then each year after that the age groups will change in September.

9PM GAMES AND JUNIORS PLAYING LATE
Last season we tried to eliminate late games by moving games to 5.30pm.  This resulted in major negative feedback so games were put back to 6pm.  Unfortunately due to the high number of team registrations, this has caused some 9pm games on Wednesday night.  We had originally put games at 6.30pm commencement to enable people to get here from work but that would have meant even later games.
Every effort will be made to share these around, but it is the only option we have.
Tuesday nights U16 Div 1 popularity will also mean games will be played at 8.30pm - whilst again we understand this is late for school nights, there is no other option with the number of teams.  It is in everyones best interest to purchase game tickets prior to the game and ensure everyone is on time to commence these games, so they don't run later than anticipated.  Also ensure scorers are available and ready to go!

Each affiliated club is able to be placed onto the BBQ roster.  This is a crucial fundraiser for each club.  If you would like to be involved with assisting your club with BBQ's please contact the President for more information.

WHERE: DBA COURTS 4 & 5

Can I use my voucher to register in the Senior competition?
If you are a still at school and get a NT Sports Voucher but are playing only in Senior Comps (League - Div 1-5 Men or Women) you can use your sports voucher to register - however you must phone the office to do it as the Sports Voucher option has been set to Junior Comps only.  The Senior registration is $85, however if you use your NT Sports voucher we are unable to refund the difference.

Why isn't my name on the team list?
Players names will not appear on the scoring system if you have only just registered and your club registrar has not had sufficient time to add you to the team.  ALL players have been given ample time to register, so if your name is NOT on the team list, you are unable to play that game.  Penalties do occur for teams playing unregistered players.

Why do I have to pay the BNT fee?
ALL players in every state or Territory pay a fee to the Peak or State Body.  It has always been paid but has been included in your DBA fees.  All fees are now separated for transparency  The BNT fee also includes the insurance fee.

Why is it so expensive this year to play basketball?
The only change in fees this year is the structure (to show the 3 levels) and the increase in the BNT fee.  Some clubs have increased fees to reflect the longer season (additional court hire) - DBA fees have been reduced in Seniors and reduction in game fees for Juniors to reflect the BNT fee being shown and paid separately.

If I am turning 16 after the end of the season but before the end of the year can I play Under 16?
You must be UNDER 16 (that is 15 or younger at the end of the calendar year - Please see above age group explanations)

Can I buy game tickets in bulk?
You are able to request a number of tickets and pre purchase them through the DBA office.  Please do this by email and you will be advised when you can pick these up.

Why do we have IPADS for scoring and scoring looks different?
DBA have upgraded the scoring system from Stadium Scoring to Courtside App inline with progresses being made Australia wide.  The new scoring system is user friendly and ipad touch screen.  It is a simple system and is designed to encourage parents to learn to score and not be afraid.  Please jump in and learn how to score.

What do I do if I need a refund?
If you need a refund of your BNT fees, you will need to contact BNT as the money is directed to their account.  If you need a refund of DBA fees, please email accounts@darwinbasketball.com.au with your reason for refund and your bank details.  If you need a refund of your club fees, please contact your club directly.

Did you know DBA, as a foundation member receives a dividend from the CAS Club?  Did you know this is dependent on our support?  In order to maximise our share it is important that we as DBA Members show our support and loyalty.  This year we received the least of the Foundation clubs, as we supported the least.  We need to improve this!  ALL DBA members receive FREE membership!  Every time you visit, buy a drink, have a meal or use the bottle shop - it is important that you swipe your card!  We have DBA Temporary Membership cards and Membership application forms at the office and courtside!  Please support the club that supports you!

The Season Changes are in line with other sports and other Basketball Associations in Australia.
It enables people to play basketball in line with other sports or select to play just one season.
It makes it more affordable for people who may only want to play one season.
It enables new members to join basketball after they complete other sports seasons (ie September and April)
The Long season is a "once off" from Feb to Sept and will then be Sept to April and April to September.
The Christmas break in 2018 is a break for ALL! Because it is during the season there is no additional work for club volunteers over this break and enables coaches, administrators and club volunteers to have a real break.
