Canberra is arguably one of Australia's most cycle friendly cities. Whether you are a weekend ambler or professional athlete Canberra offers a wide range of country and city cycling routes guaranteed to satisfy your cycling needs.
Rides around Canberra
Lake Burley Griffin plays host to a variety of recreational activities. It is skirted by a scenic cycle path that will reward the recreational cyclist with easy access to many popular Canberra attractions such as Govenor General's House, Old Parliament House, the National Library, Questacon, the National Museum, Australian National University; and a number of gardens, parklands, and wetlands.
But there is no need to stop off, you can just enjoy the delights of well in excess of 20 kms of safe cycling through ever changing scenery, maybe just hesitating for a moment for coffee at the Yarralumla Nursery - you barely even have to detour from the path for that!!
Dubbed Australia's bush capital, Canberra offers country side that will provide boundless kilometers of challenging and scenic rides for the experienced and enthusiastic cyclist. Ride just twenty minutes south west of the city and you will find yourself with choices such as the popular, undulating and scenic Cotter Uriarra loop; the rolling hills of Tidbinbilla and Corin Dam, or Tharwa, Mt Tennant and Point Lookout.
Travelling north provides a similar variety of challenging and picturesque rides - travel north up the Federal Highway, take a left turn at Collector (watch out for the rickety old pick-a-plank bridge that has claimed many an unwary cyclist) and continue on through Gunning, Gundaroo and Sutton. Before you realise it you will be back, heading south, on the Federal Highway with close to 200km worth of riding in your legs.
