Passing of Mike Hayes
On Wednesday 14 April 2010, Mike lost his battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully at home surroundered by his family.
Mike had been involved with junior rugby league on the Atherton Tablelands for many years. His sons, Chris and Timothy, played for Atherton JRL. His wife, Karen, was the canteen convenor when Mike was the President of Atherton JRL from 1998 to 2001.
In 2002, Mike became the Chairman of Eacham JRL.
In 2008, Rugby League celebrated 100 years. As a result of the celebrations, Mike received a Medal for appreciation of volunteer services to rugby league. Also in 2008, Mike was granted Life Membership of Eacham JRL.
In 2009, Mike was honoured by Cairns and District Rugby League, receiving the Ron Ambryum award for services to rugby league.
