THE Bega Bombers are keen to make amends for last weekend’s 85-62 loss to the Bermagui Breakers this Saturday when they go head to head with Tathra Eagles for the Anzac Day Cup.
With an earlier start of 12.15pm and a shift to Lawrence Park, Tathra, due to the big wet, Bombers coach Chris Dwyer hopes the town can head over and support their team as they play their second match of the 2015 Sapphire Coast AFL season.
“We are confident going into every game. I like to believe we can win any game if we put in the effort,” he said.
There has been a long standing rivalry between Bega and Tathra and Dwyer hopes to rectify Bega’s 2014 Anzac Day Cup loss, where Tathra was the victor by 11 points.
“We picked Tathra as the benchmark this year. They went down last weekend which really surprised me,” Dwyer said.
“The competition predicted us to come fifth out of the sixth, but our goal is to still win every game.”
Dwyer said he will work on his team’s running with the ball, hand balls and tackling pressure this week during training and will look to key players John Harney, Aaron Wheatley, Nathan Leahy, Kel Evans, Nathan Carpenter and Dale Leahy to back up their strong performances in round one.
Tathra captain/player Ryan O’Loghlin predicted there will be plenty of rivalry between the two teams as they both search for their first win of the season and Anzac Day Cup honours.
Tathra will come up against Bega on the back of a crushing round one defeat, which saw them lose by just nine points to Merimbula.
Although O’Loghlin said he was disappointed in the loss, he was pleased in the effort his team put in, something he said he will continue to instill in training this week.
“Tuesday night will be very light as there were a lot of sore bodies so we will just get the skills going. Thursday we will just keep the boys focused on the task at hand” he said.
O’Loghlin will again be looking for big performances from midfielder Jason Ainsworth, star goal kicker Adam McBain and rugby league converts Jack Hukins and Tyler Rose.
Both coaches encouraged spectators to come and support the teams on Saturday at Tathra.
The Last Post will be played at 12.15pm with the main bounce at 12.30pm.
Sea Eagles player Luke Taylor said it was going to be a big day of football that shouldn’t be missed.
“We’re encouraging all players and supporters to stick around after game to watch Collingwood versus Essendon on the big screen, we’ll have a barbecue on and the club bar open,” he said.
“Matt Fleet and I have put lot of work in over the years to make sure this game is one of the biggest of the year for both clubs.”
