Tai Wynyard will be a KENTUCKY WILDCAT!!!

Kiwi basketball prodigy Tai Wynyard has committed to the successful University of Kentucky Wildcats college programme.

The New Zealand Breakers development player also visited Villanova and Texas during a trip to the United States, but decided on Kentucky - the eight-time NCAA men's champions.

Kentucky are the top ranked men's team in the United States this season with a perfect 19-0 record and are favourites for another NCAA crown.

Wynyard, son of world champion woodchoppers Jason and Karmyn, is a 2.01m power forward.

The Rangitoto College student starred for the Junior Tall Blacks last year and has aspirations to eventually follow compatriot Steven Adams into the NBA.

Wynyard debuted for the Tall Blacks against South Korea last year as a schoolboy. He showed his class, scoring a lay-up with his first touch of the ball.

Wynyard, who turns 17 next week, participated in the Jordan Brand International All-Star Game last year, scoring two points and grabbing one rebound.

He is the first member of Kentucky's 2016 class.

"Kentucky seemed like the best fit for me," Wynyard told Kentucky newspaper, The Courier Journal.

"They are going to push you to the max, no matter who you are or what you do. If you are the best player in the country or the world, they're going to push you. That's the thing that really got to me. No other college really said that to me, and that's why I chose them."

Kentucky, coached by the esteemed John Calipari, have produced recent NBA stars like John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Rajon Rondo, Eric Bledsoe and Anthony Davis.
