Harbour college players shine during festive season

Harbour players based in the States have been busy over the holiday period and below we highlight the best performances from them during the past couple of weeks.

Akiene-Tera Reed finished 2018 in style as Virginia Commonwealth University Rams butted Delaware State 97-55 on New Year’s Eve. Tera scored a career best 28 points (11/13FG) in just 19 minutes of action, dished 6 assists, and claimed 4 rebounds in a stellar performance.

Tera followed that with 11 points, 5 rebounds and a couple of assists as the Rams beat St Joseph’s 59-40 to open their Atlantic 10 Conference slate in positive fashion at the weekend.

Fordham University squeezed past Maine 72-64 in overtime in the Fordham Holiday Classic. Kendell Heremaia was within one board of a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds and Harbour guard Zara Jillings had 4 points and 5 rebounds. 

The next day Fordham accounted for Middle Tennessee 61-49 to round out the first half of the season with four straight wins and a 9-5 record. Zara (7 points and 2 assists) didn’t miss a shot as she connected with three from three from the field. 

Former Westlake Boys big man Yanni Wetzel enjoyed a second straight start for Vandebilt University Commodores and rewarded the Commodores coaching staff with a season best 16 points. In front of 8,000 fans he was nearly perfect from the floor (5 from 6) and the foul line (6 from 7) in the 90-59 win against Asheville. It wasn’t such good news for the Commodores in their opening Southeastern Conference game. Yanni put together 7 points (3/6FG) but Vanderbilt were defeated 81-71 at home by Ole Miss.

Jack Salt pulled down 5 rebounds and added 2 points as Virginia University Cavaliers shut out No 9 ranked Florida State 65-52 in their opening Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) fixture. Virginia, ranked No 4 on the latest ESPN Division I rankings are a perfect 13 wins from 13 outings this season.

Miami University Hurricanes, also playing in the ACC, have lost their opening two conference fixtures - their latest setback a 90-73 defeat at Louisville. Sam Waardenburg only had 2 points for the Hurricanes but he did pull down a career high 8 rebounds including 4 off the offensive glass.

In NCAA Division II play Denhym Brooke had an outstanding game for Hawaii at Hilo as the Vulcans came from 17 points down to defeat Fresno Pacific 77-72. The ex-Rangitoto College forward posted 15 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

He followed that with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks in the 83-72 defeat of Academy of Art – the Vulcans now 4-3 in PacWest Conference play on the back of three straight wins.

Biola University Eagles, also playing in the PacWest Conference, are just behind Hilo with a 3-4 record after a solid 82-54 win at Notre Dame de Namur. Alex Talma was in double-double mood pulling down 13 rebounds to compliment 16 points – the sixth double-double of the season for the Westlaker.

Georgia Perrott-Hunt snared a team high 9 rebounds to accompany 6 points and 2 blocks as Tiffin University Dragons beat Carlow for just their third win of the season. The Dragons are 3-8 overall but 0-7 in Great Midwest Conference games.

In other Division II action Charlotte Armstrong scored a couple of points as Barry University beat Florida Tech 64-55.
