A career high for both Sam Waardenburg and Denhym Brooke

Sam Waardenburg scored an Atlantic Coast Conference career best 13 points but the University of Miami went down 78-66 against No 23 Florida State on Sunday. Sam was perfect from the floor making all four of his shots including two from beyond the arc. The Hurricanes slip to 1-6 in conference games.

Yanni Wetzel and Vanderbilt Commodores, still searching for a first Southeastern Conference win, went within a whisker of overturning No 1 ranked Tennessee eventually falling 88-83 in overtime.

Starting in the five spot Yanni was the victim of a couple of questionable refereeing calls fouling out in the fourth quarter after contributing 4 points, 3 rebounds and a brace of assists.

A couple of days later good mates Yanni and Matt Freeman scored 4 points each but it was Matt and the Oklahoma Sooners that had the post-game smiles after thumping Vanderbilt 86-55.

Jack Salt claimed a team high 8 boards to accompany 7 points (3/5FG) as No 3 Virginia eased past Wake Forest 68-45 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and then accounted for the Fighting Irish at Notre Dame 82-55.

St Mary’s Gaels (4-3 in West Coast Conference play) had a couple of tough road losses going down 71-66 at BYU and 84-77 in overtime at Pepperdine. Freshman Dan Fotu was one of three Gaels in double figures as he posted 10 points and 6 rebounds against BYU.

The Fordham University Rams went 1-1 this week (4-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference) recording a 56-38 win against Rhode Island but beaten 60-56 by Davidson University. 

The dependable Zara Jillings went quietly about her work with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists across the two games.

Also, in Atlantic-10 action Virginia Commonwealth (6-1) produced almost identical score lines for a win against St Louis (57-47) and a loss at George Washington (57-48). Akiene-Tera Reed had 7 points, 4 rebounds, 3 dimes and 3 steals in the defeat at George Washington but didn’t play in the win against St Louis due to injury.

Denhym Brooke dealt in fives as Hawaii at Hilo, now 8-8 in the NCAA Division II PacWest Conference, beat Notre Dame De Namur 66-56. Denhym had 5 points, 5 rebounds and a career best 5 blocks.

Alex Talma was also putting up numbers in multiples of five as Biola University beat Fresno Pacific 73-69 in another PacWest Conference game. Alex pulled down 5 boards to go with 10 points. Biola also have a .500 conference record having won six of twelve games.

After losing five straight games Tiffin University have bounced back with four straight wins. Georgia Perrott-Hunt collected 6 points and 6 rebounds in the 108-84 win against Ohio Valley.

Barry University are 5-6 in the Sunshine State Conference after two close games on the road. Charlotte Armstrong pulled down 6 rebounds in the 64-62 loss to Tampa and made 4 points and 3 rebounds in the thrilling 90-89 overtime win at Lynn University.
